2018 Mitsubishi Mirage gets high-tech safety features

MANILA: The units of Mitsubishi Mirage sold prior to July 2017 were imported from Thailand. However, starting from this month, MMPC (Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation) started the production of the hatchback locally at the Laguna plant. This, of course, meant that the units thus manufactured were Philippines-made and had the local specification.

However, Mitsubishi has added a couple of new safety features in the Thailand-spec Mirage which are yet to be introduced by the company here, in the Philippines. The two new features are sensor-based technologies, the FCM-LS and RMS-FORWARD (Forward Collision Mitigation system and Radar-Sensing Misacceleration Mitigation system respectively).

The FCM-LS, which is newly offered in the Mitsubishi Mirage Thailand spec, is the same forward collision management system that we find in high-end cars these days. The radar system measures the distance from the vehicle in front and acts accordingly. If the distance is very less and there is a chance of collision, the system warns the driver at the earliest and initiates slowing down the car. This helps lower the severity of the crash or even the chances of a collision in the first place.

On the other hand, the RMS-FORWARD uses the same radar-like technology which prevents the sudden and unintended starts with any object or standing vehicle that is at least four metres away. If the accelerator is depressed, the engine cuts out the power, assisting the driver on the brakes. This, of course, would help minimise the damage to a great extent or maybe help prevent it altogether.

Apart from just these two safety systems, Mitsubishi Thailand has also added some more convenience features within the cabin of the 2018 Mirage. One of the most prominent highlights is the addition of Apple’s CarPlay.

The safety features are given as standard in both GLS and GLS Limited variants. However, apart from these new additions, the spec sheet of the Philippines and Thailand-based Mitsubishi cars is similar, including the engine option.
