2019 Honda Brio: What makes it desirable?
Remember the old Honda Brio? It was the cute-looking tiny hatch that no one really noticed. But it still managed to survive the growing competition through all its years of existence. It did have looks of a teenage boy but it compensated for that by its relatively spacious cabin, a welcoming feature in its segment. Perhaps, this was one of the reasons which made the Brio desirable back in the days. But what about now?
Honda recently launched the new 2019 Brio in the Philippines. It added a number of new features to make it a better and worthy successor. The new Brio is supposedly here to help the Japanese regain control in the hatchback segment and that will only happen if the hatch sells in good numbers. So, would it? Let’s find out by discussing what makes the 2019 Honda Brio desirable?
One thing’s for sure, the new Brio is so much better looking than the previous model. Honda has worked on the exterior of the car to give it a much more mature and modern appearance. The 2019 Brio comes with large multi-reflector halogen headlamps which are bridged together by Honda’s signature thick chrome grille. If you take your time and observe closely, you would find the front fascia of the new Brio is somewhat similar to that of the other Honda cars like the BR-V and Mobilio. We also like the new stylish alloy wheels which enhance the sportiness of the car. The rear end gets roof-mounted spoiler along with a couple of small tail light clusters. But if you really want to have a sportier-looking Brio, then you should definitely check out the range-topping RS CVT variant. It comes at a price of Php 727,000 and features an aggressive and sporty exterior design with its RS Design piano black front grille, 15-inch alloy wheels, side sill garnish, rear dumper garnish, and tailgate spoiler.
It’s not just the exterior elements that have been revised on the 2019 Honda Brio specs sheet as even the interior gets new features. For starters, the cute round shaped elements have been shown the exit and replaced by angular, sharp, and mature units. For example, the round AC vents are now flat and sharp. There’s also an orange accent on the dashboard and on the black fabric seats. This is an exclusive feature on the RS model. Honda has also included a seven-inch touch screen infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB support. If you liked the older Brio for its spacious cabin, you are going to love the new one even more because Honda has made the car slightly bigger, hence, increasing the space the inside the hatch. It might surprise you with the kind of leg and headroom it has on offer.
Another important thing about the new 2019 Brio is its engine. Honda has let go of the old 1.3-litre unit that used to produce 100 horses and 128 Nm of torque. Instead, the Japanese automaker has equipped the new Brio with a new 1.2-litre engine that has been tuned to churn out 90 PS at 6,000 rpm and 110 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. Honda has finely tuned the engine and its Earth Dreams technology CVT unit to give an optimal combination of performance and fuel efficiency. In case you want a stick, there is a 5-speed manual available only with the base model. While the 2019 Brio was successful in impressing us with all of its features, the one category which we found to it to be lacking in was safety. The previous model didn’t have too many safety features to talk about and it’s the same case with the new one as well. The only safety features that a customer would get are the ABS and dual front SRS airbags. We really believe that Honda should have improved things in this department.
The 2019 Honda Brio price starts at Php 585,000 and the hatchback is available in 3 variants. It has 5 different color options - Taffeta White, Rallye Red, Modern Steel, Phoenix Orange, and Carnival Yellow. Considering the overall score of the car, we think it’s quite desirable at its price point and would be able to serve the purpose for which it has been brought to life - help Honda regain control in the hatchback segment. If you are looking to buy the new Brio, or for any other Honda car for that matter, make sure to hurry up things a bit and make the purchase before 1st July 2019 because after that, Honda is going to increase the prices of all its products in the Philippines.
