Are we going to have diesel hybrids from Suzuki?
MANILA: While other brands, especially in the crossover and SUV segments have their offerings equipped with diesel engines, Suzuki Philippines doesn’t really have a diesel-fed variant for the customers yet. If you’re thinking about the Carry, well, that is a commercial vehicle and you won’t be buying it for your regular office trips, would you?
The trouble diesel engines face in the west are not unknown to anybody and that is the reason automakers are slowly doing away with the heavy fuel. However, in the ASEAN region, the fuel is still in flow and most of the vehicle manufacturers provide diesel-powered variants.
In a recent interview, Keiichi Suzuki, Suzuki Philippines General Manager for Automobiles, said “We understand the appeal of diesel in the Philippines, particularly in the SUV and crossover market. That is why we are currently studying whether we need to bring diesel technology to the Philippines. However, we are approaching this matter delicately as other countries besides the Philippines have already moved away from diesel”.
He also believes that policies and incentives for hybrid vehicles really help in the shift of customer interest towards hybrid technology. Suzuki also said that the world is leaving diesel behind and moving towards electric and gas-hybrid vehicles.
He also added, “We are hoping that the Philippine government will offer more incentives with regards to hybrid technology. That way, we will be able to study further about the possibility of bringing hybrid-powered cars to the country”.
Keiichi Suzuki also put an end to the hopes of getting a new diesel-hybrid variant of the Ertiga. He said that the manufacturer is not planning to introduce a diesel-hybrid model of the MPV anytime soon.
