Boxster could be the next EV by Porsche
MANILA: It is evident that the Porsche Macan is all set to take the electric route very soon, however, there is another mid-engine Porsche that will follow suit. And by the looks of it, the automobile industry believes that the Boxster could well be the one to dwell into the electric fields after the Macan.
With the majority of the automakers converting their existing lineup into electrics and are introducing fresh EVs, it was quite evident that Porsche will be joining the fleet sooner than later.
While Boxter’s mid-engine design makes it quite easy for Porsche engineers to convert the car into an EV, the final decision regarding the future of the car will be made shortly, said Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG.
“We will decide this year in what direction we will develop the Boxster segment. When we do electric cars it will be a platform specially developed for electric cars. Our opinion is that when you use a car that is designed for a petrol engine it doesn't fit for an EV because of the construction of the body. When you play in the segment like Porsche to develop very sporty cars, it has to be tailor-made for each type of engine”, Blume added.
As a matter of fact, Porsche had already introduced the automobile word to the Boxster E way back in 2011. The all-wheel-drive electric sports houses two electric motors which together produce a maximum power of 242 PS and 540 Nm of torque. The car does a 0-100 kmph run in 5.5 seconds, tops out at 200 kmph, and has a range of 170 km.
While the car showcased back then was not as powerful as other Porsche cars with an internal combustion engine, the upcoming EVs by Porsche, like the Taycan will be carrying well over 600 PS of maximum power. The enhanced figures very well show the evolution of Porsche’s electric tech, don’t they? Here is hoping that the Porsche Boxter gets the powertrain it deserves and remains to be one hell of a sports car.
