Gatchalian: LGUs need to establish own mass transport system
MANILA: In order to interconnect and integrate the currently proposed national and local intermodal transportation systems, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian filed Senate Bill 951, or the Local Government Unit (LGU) Transportation Act, on Friday.

According to Sen. The city of Valenzuela, the home city of Gatchalian, has partnered with Global Electric Transport Philippines to operate Community Optimized Managed Electric Transport (COMET) electric shuttles.
The COMET units provide service both inside and outside Valenzuela.
Makati City is also working on a mass transport initiative through its Intra-City Subway project, which can operate 18 hours a day and carry 700,000 passengers.
The subway project aims to generate 10,000 jobs for residents and is anticipated to lower the number of vehicles on the road by 270,000 by 2048, reducing Makati's carbon dioxide emissions by 2.3 million metric tons.
According to Gatchalian, the bill will enable LGUs to develop modern, sustainable mass transport systems that support the idea of livable smart cities through various financial arrangements involving both public and private parties.
