Get extra miles covered with all-new Hyundai Kona Hybrid
MANILA: Hyundai’s existing Kona range is now expanded with a new hybrid form. This car is already available with a standard engine and also as a pure electric model, and now Hyundai has blent the standard engine with an electric motor to feature the Hybrid Kona. This latest variant is aimed to provide better fuel efficiency and outstanding range.
Though it is a new offering from Hyundai, the exterior remains pretty much the same as the previous model. The only difference found is the ‘Hybrid’ badging on the tailgate, also a choice of new alloy wheel available in 16-18 inches. While it might look similar, there are plenty of changes under the hood.
You get a 1.6 L four-cylinder GDI engine combined with an electric motor. The inline four alone puts out a maximum power of 105 PS and a peak torque of 147 Nm. Whereas the electric motor produces 43.5 PS of max power and 170 Nm of peak torque. Combined power and torque figures are 140 PS and 265 Nm respectively.
The hybrid powertrain performs much better than the petrol-powered Kona. Although the power figure has fallen down by 9 PS, the torque output has increased by 85 Nm. Also, this new motor emits less carbon dioxide, the figure rests at 90 g per km. It takes 11.2 seconds to reach 100 kmph and the recorded top speed is 160 kmph.
Besides the new motor performance, you get slightly better interiors. A 7-inch infotainment system is standard but you also get an optional 10.25-inch split touchscreen. This car also features Hyundai's Bluelink system and voice recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard along with wireless charging.
Kona arms itself with upgraded safety package. The safety features include a front-collision warning with avoidance assist, speed limit warning, blind-spot collision warning, smart cruise control with stop & go, lane-following assist, driver attention warning, lane-keeping assist, and high beam assist.
