Honda earned the five-star rating—the highest in the Products/Services category—after expanding its evaluation scope to 17 countries representing over 90 percent of its global automobile and motorcycle sales volume. The said milestone was celebrated at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy, during the FIA Formula One Italian Grand Prix in September.

Through the advancement of our safety technologies, activities to promote safe driving and riding practices, and a clearer understanding of how traffic collisions occur so that we can keep improving, we work to reduce the number of traffic collisions themselves,” Honda Motor Company Limited Assistant Vice President and General Manager of Traffic Safety Promotion Operations Mikihito Kojima was quoted as saying.
“The FIA Road Safety Index brings visibility to corporate road safety efforts, and has given us a clearer view of where we stand today and of what we need to address next. We see this recognition as an important milestone on the way to our challenging goal of achieving zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050, and we will continue to take on that challenge,” he added.

What is the FIA Road Safety Index?
The FIA Road Safety Index is a tool designed to enable businesses and organizations to visualize and measure the impact of their operations on road safety.
Per Honda Motor Company Limited, the Index provides a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of the road safety initiatives of each organization, while embedding a culture of safety throughout its operations.

According to the Japanese carmaker, the FIA Road Safety Index contains two ratings: the “supply chain rating” and the “products/services rating.”
The former covers a broad range of corporate activities from procurement of raw materials—to development and production of products—and customer delivery of the products. The latter, on the other hand, evaluates the safety aspects of products/services.
“Road safety remains one of the world’s most urgent challenges, and no single organization or sector can address it alone. Progress depends on action at scale across the public and private sectors, uniting all stakeholders around our shared goal of saving lives on the road,” FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said.
“The FIA has an important role to play in accelerating that change for road users worldwide. Alongside our work with companies, we encourage governments to consider how the FIA Road Safety Index methodology can support regulatory compliance frameworks and strengthen road safety standards globally,” he added.
Proven track record
Honda Motor Company Limited has a proven track record of safety, Index-wise.
In February 2025, the brand became the first company in the automotive industry to receive the three-star rating, which was the Index’s highest possible rating at the time, based on its operations in Japan.

Per the auto manufacturer, the new four- and five-star levels added by the FIA cover a higher level of assessment, with three additional modules.
To accommodate the Index development, Honda Motor Company Limited expanded the scope of the assessment to 17 countries, which account for more than 90 percent of its global sales volume for both motorcycles and automobiles, and underwent a comprehensive assessment by the FIA.
“The expansion of the FIA Road Safety Index to five stars marks an important step in our ambition to make road safety a measurable and accountable part of corporate decision-making. Organizations worldwide have a significant influence on road safety through their operations, employees, products, services and supply chains. With this expanded methodology, they can not only understand that impact more broadly, but set targets, measure progress, showcase in-depth commitment and continuously improve their performance,” FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility, Sustainability and Tourism Willem Groenewald commented.
“Honda becoming the first organization to achieve the new five-star rating demonstrates the level of ambition we want the Index to inspire. We hope this milestone will encourage many more organizations across the public and private sectors to measure their road safety footprint and take concrete action to save lives,” he added.
In particular, the following Honda initiatives were recognized:
- Commitment to pursuing safety initiatives based on a mid- to long-term strategy, with the involvement of top management
- Estimation and tracking of the number of traffic collision fatalities and injuries (footprint) on a global basis
- Monitoring of progress toward its safety goals, conducted by its global safety council as a part of Honda sustainability governance
- Global application of advanced safety technologies and organization-wide efforts to foster a safety culture
- Proactive disclosure of information related to traffic safety
