Is Nissan looking to enter the entry-level MPV segment?
MANILA: After joining hands with Mitsubishi, the Japanese auto giant, Nissan might look to expand its reach in the new segments. This XM-concept revealed by Mitsubishi might go in the re-badging process and come with Nissan’s insignia in the market. This was indicated by an executive of Nissan, who said, “ We are looking to bolster our lineup in Asia and interested in yet to be launched model.”
This means if Nissan acquired the XM-Concept then it will be competing in the entry-level MPV segment, which is becoming quite popular nowadays. And this is a segment where Nissan has no model yet therefore, entering the segment with a promising model might help the company in uplifting its market position globally. The XM-Concept is expected to face competition from the likes of Toyota Avanza, Honda Mobilio and Suzuki Ertiga.
Talking about the XM Concept, it was also showcased at the PIMS 2016 in the Philippines depicting its versatility of an MPV and capabilities of an SUV. It also possesses the new Dynamic Shield design of the company, which is also witnessed in some of the updated models of Mitsubishi. Under the hood, the production model might feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine along with AWD system.
Let’s see how the production model will perform in the respective segment after its global launch. As the company is looking to improve its presence in the South Asian market, therefore, the Philippines might also get this upcoming car from the Japanese alliance.
