Nissan commences sales of 4th-gen Elgrand in Japan

MANILA: Nissan Motor Company Limited has commenced the sales of the fourth-generation Elgrand minivan in Japan.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How many variants does the Nissan Elgrand have in Japan?

In itsss domestic market, it is sold in two variants: X e‑4ORCE and G e‑4ORCE.
  • How much do these minivans cost?

The Nissan Elgrand costs from P2.615 million to P2.874 million in Japan.
  • First unveiled at last year’s Japan Mobility Show, the car manufacturer’s newest people mover is touted as a vehicle “built to pair spacious comfort with engaging driving performance.”

More importantly, the all-new Nissan Elgrand adopts the third-generation e‑POWER hybrid system, the enhanced e‑4ORCE electric-drive all-wheel control technology, and the Intelligent Dynamic Suspension.

Per the Yokohama-headquartered carmaker, the aforementioned combination of driving technologies “improves ride comfort for every occupant while further elevating the ‘driving enjoyment’ feature that is part of the Elgrand’s DNA,” thus “delivering a grand touring experience that leaves them wishing to continue the journey for longer.”

    Other stories:

    3rd-gen e-POWER, enhanced e-4ORCE

Propulsion for the Nissan Elgrand comes from the third-generation e‑POWER hybrid system, which pairs a newly designed, power-generation-dedicated engine (ZR15DDTe) with a five-in-one e‑POWER electric powertrain unit.

The above setup five core components: motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and increaser.

Further, it also features a new control technology, which significantly improves quietness and fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, its familiar 100-percent motor drive system delivers a powerful, refined performance.

Nissan highlights that the platform is substantially improved over the previous generation, and a high-rigidity body with thorough sound insulation provides a quiet, comfortable ride.

In combination with the enhanced e‑4ORCE technology, the company stated that the driving performance is dramatically enhanced in various situations.

“In everyday driving, e‑4ORCE delivers a smooth and comfortable ride by suppressing body movement during starts, acceleration and braking,” Nissan wrote.

“Building on this coordinated control of motors and brakes, the latest system also increases use of the rear-wheel motor’s drive force during cornering, delivering a more engaging driving experience,” it added.

Further, the brand noted that drivers can also view motor output and brake-force distribution in real time on the meter display, visualizing the system’s operation.

    MAGLEV design concept

The latest iteration of the Nissan Elgrand follows “the private MAGLEV” design concept, which combines “a sense of linear speed with a dignified, commanding stance.”

As such, the people hauler gets a look befitting a one-of-a-kind Japanese flagship.

The new Nissan Elgrand is larger than the outgoing model with a sharp silhouette and a confident, planted stance from every angle. According to Nissan Motor Company Limited, it embodies the brand’s “Timeless Japanese Futurism” design philosophy and expresses Japanese DNA that transcends generations.

Its fore is fitted with a grille that was inspired by the Japanese “Kumiko,” a traditional woodworking craft, which flows seamlessly into the signature lamps. The same treatment can be seen on the full-width rear combination lamps.

The side profile is highlighted by lightweight wheels that use a resin finisher to achieve an intricate, craft-like detail that (according to Nissan) aluminum alone cannot — giving the vehicle a unified appearance.

It is available in five colors, namely the four monotones, Prism White, Shigoku, Dark Metal Gray, Midnight Black, and the premium two-tone (which we think Grand Seiko “snowflake dial” and “zaratsu finish” enthusiasts will appreciate) that combines two new colors: Fuji Dawn, which expresses the natural beauty of a fleeting moment of dawn over Mount Fuji, and Shigoku, inspired by a color that has long symbolized nobility and prestige in Japan.

The cabin of the recently launched Nissan Elgrand packs a driver’s seat with a higher sitting position. And speaking of seats, they are finished in TailorFit material.

Its door cards have quilted trims that echo the exterior “Kumiko” pattern, while the instrument cluster integrates seamless capacitive switches into a wood-grain-finish panel. Meanwhile, the center and meter displays use a 14.3-inch integrated interface screen, which Nissan Motor Company Limited, is a first for a Nissan automobile in Japan.

Finally, it gets ambient lighting — which can be adjusted up to 64 color settings — runs continuously from the dashboard along the doors to surround occupants.

    Will it arrive in PH?

At the time of writing, Nissan Philippines has not made any statement about plans to bring in the newest version of the Elgrand.

But with the brand now appearing aggressive in connecting with Filipino car buyers (it recently opened a new dealership, launched the all-new X-Trail e-POWER, and expanded its partnership with a local toymaker), it’s not impossible that the minivan will be lined up for a future Philippine release.

Afterall, it would give them a nameplate to compete against fellow Japanese carmaker Toyota (Alphard), as well as Chinese companies such as BYD’s Denza (D9).
