Nissan develops new driver-assistance system to prevent road collisions
MANILA: Nissan has announced the development of a new driver-assistance system that uses highly accurate, real-time information about the vehicle's surroundings to vastly improve accident prevention. A test vehicle was used at a Nissan facility to showcase how this technology may execute collision-avoidance techniques automatically.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What devices will be used for the ground truth perception technology?
The ground truth perception technology developed by Nissan combines data from next-generation high-performance LIDAR, radar, and cameras. How does the ground truth perception technology work?
It can accurately identify the shape and distance of objects, as well as the structure of the environment surrounding the vehicle, in real time. The vehicle can immediately evaluate the current scenario, analyze the situation, and conduct necessary collision-avoidance procedures using this information. In addition, this technology can identify slowed traffic and road impediments in the distance and make appropriate lane adjustments. Importantly, the system can also help drivers in locations where detailed map information is unavailable. The "ground truth perception" technology developed by Nissan combines data from next-generation high-performance LIDAR, radar, and cameras. “Nissan has been the first to market a number of advanced driver assistance technologies. When we look at the future of autonomous driving, we believe that it is of utmost importance for owners to feel highly confident in the safety of their vehicle. We are confident that our in-development ground truth perception technology will make a significant contribution to owner confidence, reduced traffic accidents and autonomous driving in the future,” Nissan Leading Global Research and Development Senior Vice President Takao Asami stated.
In partnership with Luminar, the next-generation LIDAR is being incorporated into Nissan's system, leveraging world-leading technologies. Since it is critical to create extremely accurate verification technologies in a digital environment for enhanced collision avoidance control, Nissan is also collaborating with Applied Intuition, a simulation firm with cutting-edge technologies.
Nissan's long-term goal, Nissan Ambition 2030, calls for the development of vehicle control technology that uses next-generation LIDAR technology to substantially minimize accidents. Nissan believes that in the approaching era of autonomous driving, driver-assistance technologies capable of preventing highly complicated collisions would be critical. Nissan hopes to complete the development of its ground truth perception technology by the mid-2020s. It will initially be offered on a limited number of new models, then on almost all new models by fiscal year 2030.
