Nissan to introduce hands-free driving on the Skyline
MANILA: While the evolution of the international combustion engine has been rather slow and there’s still time before we have roads full of electric or alternative fuel vehicles, the development of tech inside the cars has been exponential. With the passage of time, we are seeing more and more automobile manufacturer coming up with their own semi-autonomous driving systems.
Joining the league is Nissan, who is set to introduce its ProPilot 2.0 semi-autonomous driving suite on its Skyline. The automaker will roll out the car in Japan where the government laws strictly require the driver to be attentive and keep hands on the steering wheel, even in semi- or completely autonomous mode.
However, Nissan claims to have found a way by which the driver would be able to move the hands off the steering wheel. The newest tech coming from Nissan’s garages will make its debut on the Skyline, a BMW 3 Series competitor. Nissan’s ProPilot 2.0 is a semi-autonomous driving system which requires minimum driver input.
The system can make lane changes, start, stop, accelerate, decelerate, and even make basic turns. However, hands-free magic can only be performed when the car is running on a single lane road.
The system is not potent enough to do crazy driving and take sharp turns, and that’s why the driver’s hands can be off the steering wheel only on special occasions. Also, the system is effective in places like tunnels where the GPS reception is poor.
Hence, Nissan’s ProPilot 2.0 still needs a lot of work before becoming a completely autonomous driving system. The future of autonomous driving seems bright though, with automakers stuffing their shelves up with newer and updates system rapidly.
