Porsche revives Flachbau design for a very special one-off

MANILA: Porsche has revealed a very unique one-off that is practically a callback to the wildly popular Porsche 935 - a dominant racing vehicle that was sold as a production model by the German marque in the 1980s. 

Dubbed the Porsche Flachbau RS, it dons the “Flachbau” or slant-nose look that was designed to prioritize aerodynamics by doing away with the traditional 911 headlamps. Its main headlamps, meanwhile, were redesigned as small separate pieces over the length of the hood.

It was likewise given a black-and-white two-tone look dominated by “Grand Prix White” sections and exposed carbon fiber. It even comes with a U-shaped design element that outlines its nose - a clear call back to the famous Martini-liveried 935/78 called “Moby Dick.”

Notably, the car was designed and produced by Porsche’s Sonderwunsch department, Style Porsche, with the aid of engineers from Porsche Motorsport and the German racing team and performance-tuning company Manthey. 

With Manthey’s help, the Flachbau RS boasts several unique touches, such as an aggressive amount of louvers, front bumper flaps, a prominent front lip, and a chunky rear diffuser. More downforce is provided by a large wing with new “S-shaped” mounts, as well as carbon fiber aerodiscs on its rear wheels for less drag.

The interior of the stock car was likewise changed drastically. Porsche deleted the vehicle’s sound-deadening materials and floor coverings, as well as the Porsche Communication Management system. It was likewise equipped with carbon fiber bucket seats.

According to the German sports car marque, the Flachbau RS can reach a top speed of 340 kilometers per hour when in its “High Downforce” setting. This provides exactly 554 kilograms (kg) of rear downforce. It also helps that the car is 31.6 kg lighter than its stock weight.

These were confirmed by Porsche through hundreds of hours of wind tunnel testing and actual on-track tests on the highly demanding Nürburgring-Nordschleife. It likewise saw endurance tests at the Weissach site. 

Interestingly, the base car for the Porsche Flachbau RS is a lightly used 911 GT2 RS fitted with the Weissach Package. The Flachbau RS project, after all, was borne from the request of a customer who wanted to pay tribute to Moby Dick. 

In terms of mechanicals, Porsche didn’t reveal any changes for the special one-off, but the 911 GT2 RS uses a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six that is capable of producing up to 700 horsepower. 

Should Porsche really bring back the Flachbau on a wider scale, as it once did with the original 911 935 (77 units sold), or keep it as a one-off?
