There is a Nissan e-GT-R but it won’t come out
MANILA: Nissan was one of the first few automobile manufacturers to adopt electric power and has also given the world’s most selling battery electric vehicle (BEV), i.e., the Leaf. With the Leaf already in its second generation and numerous other all-electric and e-Power vehicles in the pipeline, how come the Japanese manufacturer couldn’t build an electric GT-R yet?
Well, Nissan already has an all-electric version of the GT-R in its secret garage. Surprised? We were too! Sources from Nissan have confirmed the existence of an all-electric Nissan GT-R. Moreover, the automaker has been working on one since 2014. Not only an electric powertrain has replaced the internal combustion V6 on the GT-R but the former makes over 1200 hp of maximum power and a more or less equal amount of torque which is available at standstill.
We must also credit Nissan for keeping this a secret for so many years. Not even a single spy shot of the e-GT-R has been leaked yet and that pretty much concludes that the all-electric sports car by Nissan hasn’t yet stepped out of Nissan’s private property either. Which also clarifies that the car has only been tested at the automaker’s private test tracks in Japan.
So, let’s talk about why the electric GT-R hasn’t made it out yet. Let’s burst the bubble, there won’t be one coming out anytime soon either. The reason being - Nissan has already put the project back in the drawer. An electric GT-R is no Leaf. You need bigger motor/motors and a humungous battery pack to provide the motor/motors with enough juice to produce those 1200 horses.
Sources say that this would make the e-GT-R too heavy it would very well go beyond 2000-kg considering the fact that the GT-R with a V6 already weighs over 1700-kg. Moreover, the Nissan Leaf packs in battery capacity of 40 to 62 KW and for the e-GT-R to produce those 1200 horses, Nissan would have had to fit in at least 100 KW.
As the GT-R is a performance car, the motors need power at the word go. And because of that, the range would have taken a toll with the car offering no more than a range of 200-km at its very best. Last but not least,
as it is with all the electric vehicles, all the torque is available at 0 rpm which enables the car to have insane acceleration. Sources also stated that Nissan’s test driver told the company to not to sell the car until it had a whiplash-preventing HANS device. That statement coming out from the test driver is more than an indication of the kind of acceleration the e-GT-R possesses.
