Toyota teases next-gen 2020 Highlander
MANILA: The current generation Highlander has been around since 2014 and is certainly due for an update. Next week at the New York Auto Show, Toyota will unveil the all-new 2020 Highlander. Just to give us a sneak peek as to what it may look like,
the Japanese giant has created an unconventional 3D art piece with the help of artist Michael Murphy. It is a multi-layered 3D picture composed of numerous pieces hanging in different areas.
So what can we extrapolate from this art? Well, the most obvious thing is the styling cues borrowed from the all-new RAV4. It could have a similarly styled front end with the slim slanted headlights, likewise, the rear also appears to have slimmer taillights. Overall, expect the 2020 Highlander to have a beefier more aggressive look and grow in size compared to the current model.
Since the new Highlander is expected to grow in size, it will migrate to a new platform. In all probability, it will be the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). This should help the new Highlander achieve better driving dynamics and refinement.
Engine duties are likely to be performed by an updated version of Toyota’s 3.5-litre V6, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. A hybrid variant could also be on the cards.
The Toyota Highlander is currently one of the top performers in the midsized SUV space and trails behind only the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer, in the US market. With such popularity, the new Highlander could not come soon enough and with all the updates, it should make a compelling package.
We can expect complete details of the 2020 Highlander on April 17 at the New York Auto Show. Till then, we can admire the art form Toyota has put out.
