Uber had disabled emergency braking in the self-driving car
MANILA: Remember the road accident caused by Volvo XC90 in Arizona back in March? There are some more reports coming up on the follow-up. According to the preliminary reports released on Thursday by the NTSB (National Transport Safety Board), it was declared that Uber had disabled the emergency braking in the self-driving car in order to reduce the erratic braking behavior while on the run.
Following this, Uber Technologies Inc. voluntarily put a halt on the testing in Arizona and focus more on testing in a couple of cities of California and in Pittsburgh, but only limited. The self-driving tests would be resumed in the summers but will have fewer cars and smaller routes.
According to the further reports, the Volvo XC90 had the radar system that detected the passing pedestrian six seconds prior to the impact. However, the software system considered the passing pedestrian as an ‘unknown object’ and a bicycle with varying expected travel path.
The operator inside the Uber car was not looking at the road. This has been confirmed by a video released by the police from a camera inside the car. However, the operator herself said that she was not using her phone but was monitoring the system of self-driving.
The National Transport Safety Board said that the operator behind the steering was required to come in and handle the brakes and steering. However, the autonomous technology was not designed to alert the driver. Upon sensing a possible impact, the operator engaged the steering less than a second before the impact and by the time the brakes were applied, it was already too late.
It has also been noted that the victim, Elaine Herzberg, was under the influence of marijuana and methamphetamine and did not notice the car coming in her direction at a speed of around 63 kmph (39 mph).
