Xiaomi 'Modena' EV reportedly spotted winter testing

MANILA: The Modena is the first electric vehicle from Xiaomi, and it will hit the market in 2024. This vehicle's primary development is complete, and it is currently undergoing winter testing in China. Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi, reportedly participates in the cold tests firsthand, according to Car News China.

Xiaomi, one of the most popular tech companies, debuted its automotive division in September 2021 with an initial investment of USD1.47 billion. Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi and Xiaomi Auto, stated at an investor conference held the same year that they anticipate beginning mass production in the first quarter of 2024.

The first Xiaomi prototype, which is based on the BYD Han EV, was spotted on Chinese roads in July 2022 while being tested for an intelligent driving system. Lei Jun later stated that Xiaomi aims to ship 10 million vehicles yearly, Car News China added.

In January, the first Xiaomi Modena vehicle to be ready for the road was spotted in China featuring a sedan body style. Its aerodynamic style features a tall bonnet, a roofline that slopes, and retractable door handles. A LiDAR sensor is visible on the Modena's roof. The Xiaomi Modena will be offered in three versions, each with different specifications. The BYD Blade batteries (LFP) will be installed in the first two of them. The third one will have a platform with an 800V Qilin battery from CATL. In 15 minutes, it will be able to charge from zero to 80%.

In China, a pair of Xiaomi Modenas were seen conducting winter testing. They appear to have reached Inner Mongolia, which is thought to be the coldest region in all of China. Many automakers visit the area to test their vehicles, therefore Xiaomi did not break the mold. It appears that Xiaomi evaluated the range and performance of their cars in cold weather.

Lei Jun reportedly participates in the winter testing at Modena, according to a Chinese automotive blogger, Car News China reported. Although it is well known that he loves cars, this information has not yet been proven. According to reports, Xiaomi is currently developing its own car. The debut of Modena is planned for H1 2024, giving them plenty of time to complete their product. Additionally, Xiaomi is developing its second car, code-named Lemans, which will go on sale in 2025.
