India may do away with motorcycles of and under 150cc by 2025
MANILA: Increasing pollution and depleting fuels have been a major problem for economies to deal with lately. In order to solve both the problems with a single solution, a proposal has been sent to the Indian government which aims at banning all kind of two-wheelers with engines up to 150cc by 2025. The proposal wants only electric motorcycles to be sold instead of these gasoline-fed motorcycles. As these smaller displacement two-wheelers make up 75% of the total vehicles in India, the majority of the pollution is caused by these motorcycles.
Furthermore, while the deadline for the up to 150cc motorcycle sales to be replaced with electric ones is 2025, the proposal suggests only e-rickshaws should be sold instead of the conventional three-wheeled auto rickshaws by as early as 2023. The proposal has been presented by the NITI Ayog, which is headed by Narendra Modi, who is the Prime Minister of India. Whether the newly formed government of India accept the proposal or not, is to be seen.
As a matter of fact, the Indian two-wheeler industry is the biggest in the world. The market accounted for 21 million sales in 2018 alone. On the other hand, only 3.3 million cars were sold during the same time period in India. Hence, while the new rules and regulation will significantly impact the Indian motorcycle industry, the move will certainly benefit manufacturers who already have electric technologies.
In recent times, automobile manufacturers have actively raised their voice against the restriction of internal combustion engines. However, this new proposal should entice the automakers as the draft has proposed incentives for manufacturing and selling electric motorcycles. On the contrary, there are also penalties on gasoline-powered two-wheelers. Not only this move shall bring down the need for more fuel in India but should also improve the continuously degrading quality of air in the country.
