Netizens divided over Go viral video

MANILA: A  video involving Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Special Operations Group-Task Force for Road Clearing (SOG-TFRC) Head Gabriel Go flagging down a public school teacher riding a motorcycle without a helmet went viral and earned mixed reactions from netizens in recent days. 

For those who are not aware of the video, the MMDA official flagged down a uniformed public school teacher who failed to wear a helmet. 

“O, teacher ka tapos wala kang helmet [You’re a teacher but you’re not wearing a helmet>,” Go said after asking a few opening questions. 

“Paano naman natin tuturuan ang mga estudyante natin kung ganoon?” [How can we teach our students if that’s the case?> Go asked further.

Go then asked for the official receipt and certificate of registration, which were provided immediately, but the teacher asked not to be recorded on video. Go responded that the teacher’s face was blurred. 

The teacher pleaded, saying that people in the area know him, but Go said that: “Eh dapat inisip niyo muna yan bago kayo gumawa nang mali” [You should have thought of that first before doing something wrong>.

The netizen’s reactions

The video mentioned above has sparked intense debate and mixed reactions among netizens across various social media channels. 

On one side, there are those who support Go and have stated that the ticketing for the violation was done lawfully. In this case, the erring teacher was clearly in violation of Republic Act Number 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009. 

What sparked intense scrutiny and the ire of other netizens, however, was the act of posting the video itself. 

Notably, the video was initially aired on Gabriel Go’s personal Facebook page, and it was described by critics as an alleged “public humiliation” of the teacher. As mentioned, the teacher requested not to be filmed, and so the video was taken without his consent. As of July 17, 2026, the video is still up. 

MMDA response

Following this, the MMDA has issued a show-cause order against Gabriel Go due to the controversial viral video.

As of July 15, 2026, the MMDA’s Public Information Office has already received letters from various groups and has assured the public that it is conducting an investigation as to Go’s liability. The agency has also asked Go to “explain his side in formal writing.” This, per the agency, will be done via the aforementioned show-cause order. 

Amid the show-cause order, Go is barred from participating in clearing operations.
