Review Innova 2015

  • Overview

The long running of Toyota Revo in the Philippine auto market came to an end with the launch of Toyota Innova AUV (Asian Utility Vehicle) in the year 2005. Compared to the three versions of Revo that were launched in 1998, 2000 and 2003 respectively, the Toyota Innova came in as an AUV or MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) of new-age. The Innova imbibed everything that appealed to the masses of all class, especially the ones with larger families. Besides Philippines, Innova was also introduced in many other budding auto markets in the Asian regions and everywhere it collected heartening response from the buyers. With its upmarket exterior design and attractive frontage, it shed all the bulky aspirations and hefty looks that are basically a part and parcel of AUVs. Innova has been the bestseller in the AUV or MPV segment. The urbane looking 5-door MPV went on to become smart choice of the car buyers as it not only possessed 'great appearance' but was also very spacious from inside. The interiors provide decent comfort and welcome passengers with its long list of convenience features on the move that includes infotainment, comfy seats, handy features etc. Sighting its multi-tasking abilities, it is also used as patrol vehicle by the Philippine National Police and as taxicab by Ninoy Aquino International Airport's metered taxicabs. The Japan-based auto maker Toyota Motors presented an all-new upgrade of Innova in February 2014. The New Innova now carries a refreshed look. The change is very visible in terms of new grille, front-rear bumper, fog lamp housing and design etc. Moreover, cabin too sees an adequate revision for good with more added gadgetry and technologically advanced features alongside sufficient safety gears for the passengers. The 2014 Innova MPV is available in conventional choice of fuels in the form of diesel and gasoline. The diesel variant is equipped with 2.5 liter engine that pumps out a maximum power of 102 PS and 260 Nm of peak torque, while the gasoline engine is a 2.0 liter that pumps out 136 PS and 182Nm of power and torque respectively. Both the machines deliver pretty decent fuel efficiency in the city and on long routes.

Mileage and Fuel economy

One of the main reasons of Toyota Innova's success in Philippines has been the fuel efficiency part. Both engines i.e. 2.5 liter diesel and 2.0 liter gasoline provide with pretty decent mileage numbers. The 2.5 liter engine that churns 102PS and 260Nm, delivers a mileage of about 8 km/l to 10 km/l in city traffic, while on long routes it gives out nearly 11 km/l to 13 km/l. Furthermore, the 2.0 liter gasoline that generates 136 PS and 182 Nm is good enough to deliver 7 km/l and 11 km/l in city and highways respectively.

The 2.5L diesel power mill yields out a maximum power of 102 PS at 3600 rpm, whilst the lower displacement unit 2.0L gasoline mill develops a maximum power of 136 PS at 5600 rpm.

Acceleration & Pickup

Belonging to MPV segment, the Toyota Innova can't boast spellbinding acceleration figures, but still they are very acceptable. The gasoline powered MPV touches the magical 100 kmph mark from nothing in 12.8 seconds; moreover the top speed claimed by the Japan based automaker is 170kmph. On the other hand, the diesel fuelled trim catches up the 100kmph mark from zero in 15 seconds alongside notching the top speed of 149kmph.

The new exterior design of the Innova is a welcoming change. The overall structure screams 'B-I-G' in any sense and promises to have loads of space inside for all. The reworked fascia now gets an aggressive and large 3-slat radiator grille, which very appealing compared to the predecessor model. The bonnet line has about four arcs/cues flowing towards the grille giving it a new charisma. The company logo of trust sits amid the top slat of chrome grille proudly that is nicely bordered with the more chrome garnish. The new front dynamic bumper design is catchy with its sporty touch and black plastic moulding making it look very athletic and sturdy. The bumper at the front also holds the redesigned fog lamp housing that now flaunts C-shaped chrome/silver appliqu?, which appears very pleasing to eyes. The side profile has smartly shaped indicators mounted on the wing mirrors, while the B and C pillar boast blackened strips for that macho appeal. Moreover, to increase the premium value, the door handles carry chrome garnish alongside on the doors is a side rubber-strip for protection from minor bruises. The rear of Toyota Innova comprises of large windscreen and wiper, whereas the large tail lamps have silver insertions. The big tail gate has broad chrome slat to add to the rich-feel coupled with reflectors, which adds sophistication with safety. The large rear bumper is kept simple with multi reflectors at each corner.

Exterior Measurements

The fascinating Toyota Innova has got nicely shaped dimensions, which are neither too odd not too uncanny. The length of Innova measures 4585 mm, while the width and height scales 1775mm and 1760mm in that order. Furthermore, the wheelbase is pretty promising at 2750 mm.

The Toyota Innova is made for space, space and space. And this can be easily sensed from its outside dimensions. The roomy cabin has the capacity to seat 7-8 occupants easily including the driver. One of the major highlights of the cabin is its majestic fit and finish levels with all three rows ensuring adequate leg-room head-room and shoulder-room for each passenger. The plush captain seats at second row and bench seat at last row add to the inside glamor. The dual tone dashboard looks mesmerising, whilst the silver accented new steering wheel with mounted controls make things appear very adorable. The plastic used inside on the dash, console, and doors is of decent quality and the upholstery used in the seats too is of relatively premium quality. To add plushness to the cabin, the instrument panel and center cluster comes with wooden grain and silver trim. To add more handiness there is AT shift indicator, console box with lid and rear cup holder, glove box with key etc. If the space behind the third row seems less, they can be 60:40 folded in order to acquire more space for the luggage.

Interior Comfort

When it comes to comfort and convenience, the Toyota Innova never falls short as there is a long list of numerous features that come handy while on the move. The powerful Air conditioner comes with dual climate control system that ensures the cooling to reach every occupant in the cabin. The newly designed 4-spoke steering wheel emanates with leather covering and has wooden/silver trims, making it look very premium, moreover, the mounted audio and MID switches makes it more interesting. Other aspects include door open warning, seat belt warning, 12V charging point, key left and lights off reminder and many more.

Interior Measurements

The Toyota Innova rides high in terms of interior space dimensions. The boot space comes as big as 300 litres. What's more, if there are more belonging or luggage, the space can be increased by folding the last row seat in a 50:50 split ratio. Likewise, there is a large fuel tank that can store a huge 55 litres of fuel which is really commendable.

Engine and Performance

The two available engines with Toyota Innova are gasoline and diesel. Firstly the 2.5 liter, 2494cc diesel engine comes with Direct Injection Technology with 4-Cylinder in-line 16V turbo charged DOHC generating a maximum power output of 102PS at 3600 rpm along with a high torque of 260Nm at 1600-2400rpm with 4-speed Automatic transmission and 200Nm at 1400-3200rpm with 5-speed Manual transmission. The other counterpart is the 2.0 liter 1998cc gasoline VVTi engine with Electronic fuel technology and 4-Cylinder in-line 16V. This engine extracts a maximum power of 136 PS at 5600 rpm and yields high torque value of 182 Nm at 4000 rpm. The gasoline engine is only available with 5-speed manual transmission.

Stereo and Accessories

Inside the Innova cabin, the equipment placed at the centre just below the dash is the Multi Info Display (MID) that appears pulsating, while the excitement gets twofold with the presence of 2-DIN audio /music system that plays CD/Tuner/MP3. There are as many as 6 speakers inside in order to ensure surround sound to all occupants. For more ease there is auxiliary port together with Bluetooth connectivity that has audio streaming feature. Moreover there is newly added touch screen Audio Video Navigation system that enhances the overall ambience inside and is also very convenient to use.

The top variants of Toyota Innova are fitted with 15-inch 205/65 6JJ alloy wheels with centre cap. Furthermore the other trims come with 15-inch 205/65 6JJ steel wheels with full cap.

Braking and Handling

Despite of the fact that Toyota Innova is a large AUV, the body roll sensed while driving is pretty less. The front wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes and the rear has drum brakes. The braking is satisfactory with the anti-lock braking system that helps it bestow no-skid driving experience. The front axle has twin-wishbone system and the rear has four-link system that features lateral rod. Moreover, the power assisted steering column provides accurate response and makes the minimum turning radius of 5.4m hassle free.

Safety and Security

The Japanese carmaker Toyota has installed many active and passive safety features in order to warrant maximum protection to the passengers inside and pedestrians outside. Primarily Toyota Innova's body comes GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) certified for its sturdy built quality. Other safety aspects consists of SRS airbags for driver and co-driver, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), 3-points ELR seat belts for all, bulb type high mount stop lamp, child lock protector, vehicle security system/ immobilizer and alarm with key less entry, back up sensors, side door impact beams and many more.
