The Dongfeng Captain C is a new age truck aimed at those who are looking out for a different option in the segment with a newness apart from the already established names. The Dongfeng Captain C is available in three different versions, all of which differentiate on the basis of the total length of cab chassis – 17 ft, 14 ft and 12.5 ft, all of which come with a common powertrain on offer.
The Dongfeng Captain C has an interior which very much resembles that of a passenger car, although that of a car from the bygone era. It covers up many of the basic aspects and features of a car but misses out on the impeccable finish of more premium trucks.
The driver’s cockpit consists of a nice looking multifunctional steering wheel which comes integrated with audio, Bluetooth, and cruise control. The instrument console looks decent with an orange backlit for a well informative MID screen.
The centre console looks a bit dated in terms of design and comes integrated with basic looking manual AC controls and a single DIN audio system above it. The cabin is complete with basics like power windows, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering and a 12V power outlet.
In the recent years, the factor of styling is taken with a bit more seriousness than ever before, and the Dongfeng Captain C, being a rather new name in the segment, has focused a lot towards this direction, with a pleasant-looking front fascia.
The Dongfeng Captain C looks a bit aerodynamic thanks to the windshield which is curved on the top. It also comes with a premium-looking piano black appliqué below it spread across its entire width which houses the name of the brand and is curved from the edges, thus blending beautifully into the windscreen.
The lower portion of the front fascia of the Dongfeng Captain C consists of a horizontally stretched U-shaped chrome element forming the front grille along with two black plastic slats laid out in the same manner as the former, just below it.
Just adjacent to the front grille are the L-shaped broad headlamps on either sides, which do look contemporary bits, thanks to the blackened finish as well as the inclusion of daytime running LEDs placed in the middle of it at an angle. The front bumper looks simple with trapezoidal fog lamps on either ends of it.
The Dongfeng Captain C has a cabin that can seat two people with ease, with an optional central small seat aiding in seating for a middle passenger in case of emergency. One does get an upright seating posture, though the gear lever is not that ergonomically placed as one would expect. The ride is on a firmer side too, with the Captain C getting semi-elliptical leaf springs with double-acting shock absorbers at both front, as well as rear.
The Dongfeng Captain C has got an adequate powertrain combination under its shell, which is a 3.9-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The diesel engine, which here is coupled to a standard five-speed manual gearbox, puts up a maximum power output of 125 PS and a peak torque output of 410 Nm. For its size, the engine feels a bit low on power when it comes to figures on paper, but on the go, it gets the job done quite effectively.
The Dongfeng Captain C, being a budget-oriented truck, isn’t too rich in terms of safety. However, the steering column is lockable in times of emergency situations.
The Dongfeng Captain C, at its price, is a well-rounded product, and with its configurable styles of load-carrying capacities giving the customers a variety of options to choose from. The engine performance is decent and the car like driver’s cockpit enhances the driving experience to a considerable extent. If there are scopes for improvement, the Dongfeng Captain C could have more power and a couple of more features to give it a more upmarket appeal.
