Overview

Being in production since 1935, the Chevy Suburban 2016 is a full-size SUV that has been announced for its launch in the Philippines this march. It will certainly be a tough contender for any vehicle in its class as it not only features an extended body size than a conventional full-size off-roader but is also backed by its legendary nameplate that has existed for over 90 years now. But the old name plate doesn’t mean that the new suburban cannot compete with the newcomers and has been outfitted with some of the most advanced features that enhance the driving experience and comfort. The vehicle underwent a complete remodel last year that made it much more than a regular luxury off-road vehicle.

The Suburban is categorized as an extended Sports Utility Vehicle due to the fact that it shares its platform and chassis with that of a pickup truck that provides it with an enormous boot space of nearly 3500 litres. And if that is not enough, the manufacturers have also provided the vehicle with a massive 5.3-litre V8 engine that is controlled through an advanced 6-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain comprises of an EcoTec3 V8, that has been enhanced for performance through Variable Valve Timing, Direct Injection and Active Fuel Management boosting the engine’s output and fuel efficiency. Offered with only a gasoline powered variant, the engine churns out an ungodly amount of 355 hp @ 5600 rpm and a torque of 516 nm @ 4100 rpm. It is also offered in a choice between a two-wheel and 4-wheel drive option according to the buyer’s liking. The 4x4 version has also been equipped with additional features that enhance the Suburban’s off-road capabilities.

All this power might have resulted in a bumpy ride, but thanks to the engineers at Chevrolet have equipped the 2016 Suburban with a magnetic ride control suspension with electronically controlled shock springs to result in a ride that is as smooth as a Pink Floyd concert. The headlamps have a sculpted appearance that aids aerodynamics along with providing a smooth seamless surface to the vehicle’s front. The rear windshield has also been equipped with a rain sensing wiper with a top spoiler with integrated brake light to give it a sporty appearance. Other external accessories include lighted step-rails at both sides and black-colored roof.

Coming to the vehicle’s safety quotient, it has been showered with a wide array of advanced safety features such as Anti-lock braking system, seat-belt warning for driver, adjustable steering wheel with a collapsible column, Parking assist, Stability control, speed-sensitive door lock, anti-theft, lane departure warning, blind spot warning. All these technologies along with a highly durable frame that has been tested to reduce any harm to the occupants through distributing the force of impact to its intelligently placed crumple zones. The interiors too look tremendous with the wood finish and a crazy looking centre console and an interactive instrument panel with navigation. The audio system is powered by 10 Bose speakers and the MyLink infotainment panel with support for a variety of media and ports for AUX and USB connections. The A/C vents have also been placed for all the three rows that ensures efficient cooling within minutes.

All in all, the Chevy Suburban 2016 looks like a monolithic contender in the SUV segment and outshines its competitors in style. Lets hope that all the excitement about the vehicle is put to rest by Chevrolet motors this march when the latest Suburban SUV makes its way in the Philippine car showrooms.
