Positioned in the middle of the lineup of light-duty trucks from Fuso, the Fuso Canter FE84 is based on the range starting Fuso Canter FE73, but gets a host of mechanical advancements in terms of powertrain and chassis. The Fuso Canter FE84 is available in a single variant, which can be fetched in the single paint shade of white and the standard diesel manual powertrain.
The interior cabin of the Fuso Canter FE84 is again lifted off completely from the smaller Fuso Canter FE73, which is not a bad thing, considering the fact that the cabin is thoughtfully designed with good ergonomics and storage spaces.
The Fuso Canter FE84 welcomes you with its driver’s cockpit, which is a combination of a tilt and telescopic adjustable large steering wheel as well as a sober all-analog instrument console behind it.
The center console of the dashboard here has a slightly protruding out design, and looks contemporary for a truck, as it incorporates both the panels of 1-DIN audio system as well as manual AC knobs in it. There are a host of bottle holders as well as open storage spaces in the cabin as well as on the dashboard, which makes this three-seater cabin a highly practical place to be in.
The Fuso Canter FE84 is based on its smaller sibling, the Fuso Canter FE73, and shares the entire exterior design exactly the same. One can’t differentiate much between the two trucks, save for the fact that the Fuso Canter FE84 is the longer one of the two, and has extra two wheels at the back.
The boxy front appearance of the Fuso Canter FE84 gets a rectangular front windscreen, the lower edges of which have mounts for the large outside rearview mirrors. The front windscreen gets further assistance of two sleek horizontally laid faux air vents below them.
The rounded trapezoidal grille of the Fuso Canter FE84 too has been shared with the smaller Fuso Canter FE73, and gets a sleek chrome garnish in the middle of it, below which sits a Mitsubishi logo. The grille gets vertically placed trapezoidal headlamps on its either sides, which are big but lack LED elements, thus making them look very plain and a bit outdated. The front bumper of the Fuso Canter FE84 too has been lifted off from the Fuso Canter FE73, and features a trapezoidal skid plate around the license plate housing.
The large window in the side profile of the Fuso Canter FE84 gets a steeply uprising window line. Along with this, the side profile has another athletic design bit in the form of a broad character line flowing from the edge of the front headlamps and passing through the door handles on the sides
The overall chassis of the Fuso Canter FE84 is longer than that of the Fuso Canter FE73, but has the same mechanical setup as the latter, with laminated leaf springs at both the ends and additional stabilizers for the front suspension. Here too, the reverse Elliot I beam front axle and fully floating rear axle perform together to enable the truck to carry an additional load with great prowess. This longer truck runs on a set of six 16-inch wheels, which are large than that of the Fuso Canter FE73 (15-inch wheels).
The Fuso Canter FE84 shares its 3.0-litre inline-four diesel engine with the Fuso Canter FE73. However, here, the engine gets a different turbocharger and a state of tune, and as a result, posts better performance outputs – 145 PS of maximum power output and 362 Nm of torque. Also, this engine gets a better gearbox in the form of a 6-speed manual unit.
Save for a lockable cabin which comes with a central locking mechanism, the Fuso Canter FE84 misses out on a number of crucial safety features.
The overall design of the Fuso Canter FE84 is totally similar to that of the Fuso Canter FE73 in and out, which might be a turn off for some, as it lacks in individualistic visual appeal. However, the additional mechanical strengths which it has in terms of a more powerful engine, better gearbox, longer chassis and bigger wheels make it a perfect upgrade over the smaller Fuso Canter FE73.
I have been driving trucks all my life, and I have driven quite a few of them, from heavy trucks to light trucks. Recently, I have been driving the Fuso Canter FE84, and I think it is the best 16-footer light truck out in the Philippines market. I can say that because the truck offers all you will need in
I recently got two Fuso Canter FE84s for my shipping fleet, and I have been very happy with the overall performance and quality of these trucks. The Canter FE84 is a 16-footer light-duty truck that is perfect for light and medium load carriage purposes. The build quality is supreme, and you get pretty decent returns in terms of both fuel
