The Fuso Canter FE85 sits right on the top of the lineup of light-duty trucks from Fuso. Being offered in a single variant and in the sole paint shade of white, the 18-footer Fuso Canter FE85 has been made available with a diesel manual powertrain as standard.
It is on the inside, where the Fuso Canter FE85 lacks individuality. While its longer footprint gives it a sense of a longer and bigger vehicle on the outside, the overall cabin design, being exactly the same as the Fuso Canter FE73 and Fuso Canter FE84 robs much of its desirability as a more premium truck.
However, the cabin in itself is ergonomically well designed with a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel, a clear and crisp display for the analog dials for the instrument console, host of bottle holders and open storage spaces.
The center console of the dashboard, which is finished in a theme of silver, also gets a couple of basic amenities, like a 1-DIN audio system and manual AC knobs. The three-seater cabin of the Fuso Canter FE85 gets a flat bench with upright seating position, which is good enough with ample shoulder room and headroom.
The overall design of the Fuso Canter FE85 is the same as its other smaller siblings from the light-duty truck lineup, the Fuso Canter FE73 as well as Fuso Canter FE84. However, thanks to its long wheelbase and increase in length due to a longer chassis, it tries to position itself as a bigger truck with an enhanced stance and poise.
At the front, the Fuso Canter FE85 has got a conventionally styled boxy layout, which consists of a rectangular front windscreen at the top and a rounded trapezoidal grille at the bottom. There are two thin faux air vents below the windscreen, whereas the mounts for the stretched-forward rearview mirrors are placed on the edges of the front windscreen.
The grille of the Fuso Canter FE85 has rounded edges and incorporates a Mitsubishi logo, with a thin strip of chrome placed on top of it. This grille is flanked with large and bulky looking trapezoidal headlamps, which though look quite boring due to the absence of any kind of LED treatment. The front bumper of the Fuso Canter FE85 has a centrally placed silver skid plate, which adds some novelty to the front profile of the truck.
On moving toward the sides, the Fuso Canter FE85 has its majority of the side profile covered by the large cabin window panel, which has its shoulder line rising sharply while going towards the rear. A thick character line flows from the edges of the headlamps through the door handles, adding some character to the otherwise simple design of the side profile.
The increased length and additional two wheels at the rear not only aid in giving the Fuso Canter FE85 a better stance but also are helpful in enhancing the load-carrying capacity of the truck. The laminated leaf springs at both the ends, with additional stabilizers at the front, help in giving the Fuso Canter FE85 a much better load carrying capability. The Fuso Canter FE85 also gets reverse Elliot I beam front axle and fully floating rear axle for sustaining heavy load conditions with ample prowess.
Instead of getting a 3.0-litre diesel engine like on its other smaller siblings like Fuso Canter FE73 and Fuso Canter FE84, the Fuso Canter FE85 gets a much bigger and more powerful 4.9-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the engine in the Fuso Canter FE85 churns out 179 PS of power and 530 Nm of torque, making it the most torquey diesel engine in its segment.
Despite being the biggest light-duty truck in its lineup, the Fuso Canter FE85 doesn’t get any prominent safety feature, except for a lockable passenger cabin inbuilt with central locking mechanism.
