Vietnamese truckmaker gets BJ Mercantile as local distributor
MANILA: Vietnamese vehicle manufacturer Thaco has formally entered the Philippine market via BJ Mercantile Incorporated (BJM).

The MoU was signed today (June 26).Based on the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed today (June 26), the local conglomerate will serve as the brand’s truck and bus distributor.
In his message during the MOU signing ceremony, Thaco Auto Vice President Doan Dat Ninh expressed elation over the newly-inked bus distribution cooperation with BJM.
While the distributorship has just been forged, the executive of the Vietnam-headquartered marque said that as early as 2005, Thaco Auto has supplied over 25,000 buses of various types to the Vietnam market and exported them to the Philippines, as well as Thailand and Singapore.
“With the goal of participating deeply in the global value chain and enhancing competitiveness in the context of regional and global integration, since 2018, Thaco Auto has focused on developing Vietnamese-branded automotive products, particularly Thaco Bus with a localization rate that has now reached over 70 percent. The products have not only conquered the domestic market but has also been exported to ASEAN countries, including the Philippines — a highly potential market with a well-defined public transportation system modernization roadmap,” Ninh shared, adding that the by the end of 2019, the brand exported its initial batch of buses to the country.
Further, Ninh vowed to continue expanding Thaco’s bus product lineup as well as develop distribution and service networks in the Philippine market. “We hope to make active contributions to building a safe and modern public transportation system in your country,” he noted.
“With our capabilities in automotive design, manufacturing, and professional after-sales services, Thaco Auto commits to delivering the long-term concrete value and contributing to the development of the public transportation industry in the Philippines.”
For her part, BJM Vice President Leilani Lim Tan expressed confidence in its partnership with Thaco.
According to her, the collaboration is aligned to its “commitment to provide innovative, cost-effective, and reliable transport solutions to support the growth of Filipino businesses.”
