The Rolls-Royce Dawn is the sole convertible car from the lineup of the British major currently. Based on the platform of the very popular Rolls Royce Ghost, the Dawn is the open-top two-door version of the same, and shares much of its bits with it. The Rolls Royce Dawn is available with a host of personalization options and a twin-turbo V12 petrol engine as standard.
The Rolls Royce cars’ cabins are known for their sheer opulence when it comes to the choice of materials and impeccable fit and finish levels, and the Dawn is no exception in this case. The cabin is wrapped in premium leather, with the choice of colour as per one’s preference, with nicely executed use of fine wood and metal at places.
The three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel, as well as the three pod analog instrument console, are designed in a retro layout. The centre console has a very simple and elegant design, with all the elements such as AC vents and various controls along with rotary style gear lever at their conventional places and designs.
The car lacks a modern touchscreen infotainment system complete with all the smartphone connectivity options, which might be a concern for some. However, the sound quality from the basic music system equipped is just fabulous.
Apart from the use of the best possible materials imparting ultimate luxury to the cabin, the Rolls-Royce Dawn is heavily equipped with all the modern features and a four-seater layout. However, at the rear, the cabin is good enough only for two people, and a limited legroom is a bit of concern for taller passengers.
While there is no dearth in the level of attention and road presence, which the Rolls Royce Dawn commands wherever it goes, the overall styling and design of the Dawn has started to show its age, considering the fact that its original design has remained unchanged since its inception.
Nevertheless, the Rolls Royce Dawn manages to be in a league of its own, with a broad frontal stance exhibiting the traditional rectangular front grille with vertical slats within it and thick chrome garnish at the top. The headlamp assembly consisting of projector bulbs and daytime running LEDs surrounding them have been shared with the Ghost, along with the slim strips of LED turn indicators placed below them.
The side profile of the Rolls Royce Dawn is gargantuan, thanks to the stretched length of the car. The two-door look with the inverted pattern of opening and closing with plush chrome door handles is something which is unique to this car. At the rear too, the Rolls Royce Dawn is devoid of any unwanted visual drama with simple tail lamps sourced from the Ghost and a chrome surround wrapped around the shoulder line of the Dawn.
Armed with double-wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear, both of which are independent and pneumatic, the Rolls-Royce Dawn is one of the best cars when it comes to imparting comfortable ride quality. While the car weighs almost 2.5 tonnes and measures over 5 meters in length, it doesn’t feel so, and the car is easy to drive as well.
The Rolls Royce Dawn shares its behemoth 6.6-litre V12 petrol engine with the Ghost, which is highly regarded as one of the creamiest and most refined engines in the history of motor cars. Paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, this twin-turbo engine breathes out a maximum power output of 570 PS and a peak torque output of 780 Nm while channeling all the power to rear wheels.
The Rolls Royce falls a bit short when it comes to safety features, and packs in only the basics like the front, side and knee airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and traction control.
The Rolls Royce Dawn might be a bit old school when it comes to the list of comfort and convenience features of the modern digital era. But then, when it comes to delivering on the front of unadulterated luxury and comfort, there are few cars that achieve excellence as good as the Dawn.
I think when someone utters the word “luxury”, the first name that comes to our mind is the Rolls Royce Dawn. This vehicle from the British carmaker can be considered as an epitome of luxury which excels in all the departments that one can think of. It gets an elegant design with a youthful interior and unmatched comfort level. In
