When it comes to automobile manufacturing moguls across the globe, Toyota Motor Corporation is regarded as one of the largest and most respected automakers. Since its inception, it has been the name behind many successful car models. Toyota under its thriving portfolio in Philippines has got everything from gorgeous hatchbacks to scintillating sedans and from spacious MPVs to sturdy SUVs and tough-built Pickups. And in the pickup truck segment the long noticeable name has been ‘Toyota Hilux’. Started as a very basic workaholic pickup vehicle, it first came to the core long back in the late seventies. Since then, it has received continuous upgrades in terms of exterior-interior design and under hood mechanicals. The versatile four-wheeler can be seen in different avatars worldwide such as of ambulance, security/police/patrol vehicle, tow-away vehicle, etc. Currently in its seventh generation that was launched in the year 2005, Hilux was given a facelift in 2011 and 2013. The state of art platform in the modern Hilux is shared by well-known Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Innova across the globe. The latest version of Hilux pickup truck is designed spectacularly by the Japan based auto maker and by the front looks, one can only gander at a classy SUV to get in. The new Hilux with its catchy appearance is targeted to be much more than just another pickup and can be termed as a lifestyle SUV with its splendid double cabin version. The impressively crafted exteriors are complemented by a remarkably spacious cabin. The Hilux's interiors are nicely done with nearly all the amenities and comforting elements of an SUV. Powering the unruffled pickup truck under hood is the mammoth choice of 3.0-litre and 2.5-litre diesel engines. Here the larger displacement engine is available in sole variant, while the lower one comes in two different state of tune that possess ruthless load and drag capability. Presented with 4X2 and 4X4 setups, the engines are mated to manual and automatic transmission gearboxes. Toyota has equipped the Hilux with sufficient active and passive safety features in order to protect occupants in case of any accident.

Interior & Features

The inside of Toyota Hilux is no less than an SUV. The cabin is roomy and has reasonable space for 5 medium sized adults including the driver. The overall interior layout and seating arrangement is nicely done and a hint of premiumness can be sensed in every bit. The large twin shade dashboard has simple yet presentable looking silver trimmed center fascia that has a music system, multi information display, air conditioner blowers and control switches. At one side of the dash is the glove box and ac vent; while at the other is big instrument cluster that has illuminated optitron/analog speedometer, tachometer and others. The 4-spoke silver accented urethane steering wheel with mounted controls look plush and more plushness comes in the form of urethane gearshift knob on the floor. Furthermore, there are many storage options such as cup/ bottle holders at front (4) and rear (4) rows, front rear door pockets, etc.

Interior Comfort

The comforting aspect starts right from the powerful air conditioner at front that allows amazing cooling inside the cabin for all passengers. The windows in Toyota Hilux come with power up and down feature alongside there is power door lock feature as well that enhances safety, and power outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs). The upholstery of full moquette/ semi-fabric used at seats is of good quality and provides sufficient comfort. The front seats with headrests have sliding and reclining features and the driver’s seat has additional vertical height adjust element for convenience, while rear bench type seats have tip up function with storage feature. Some more handy aspects include sun visor with vanity and ticket holder, day and nightinside rear view mirror, wireless door lock, 12V accessory power socket, key/ light on warning, navigation etc.

Interior Measurements

The cabin space of Toyota Hilux is pretty adequate for all occupants. Moreover, for extra size luggage or belongings, there is open space that plays the role of boot for this versatile vehicle, credits to the long wheelbase. With handy tailgate design, the goods/ baggage can be easily loaded and unloaded.

Stereo and Accessories

The entertainment on the move is a must in Toyota vehicles and depending upon the trim levels, the manufacturers have equipped the Hilux with high class music/ audio system. The 2-DIN stereo or the 6.5-inch LCD display that can play DVD, CD, AM/FM and MP3, while there is auxiliary input support with Bluetooth connectivity for more handiness. There are as many as 2 or 6 speakers that are responsible for streaming the sound to the ears of the occupants. Additionally, the top in line Hilux models have mounted switches on steering wheel for audio control.

With its exclusive appearance, Hilux is the most sought-after in the pickup truck segment. Looking at the broad size of the two cabins, the large open space at the back is commendable; courtesy: long wheel base. The frontage has got a very SUV-ish look with large radiator grille that has the thick chrome-slat bordering and amid the top is chrome garnished company logo. The wrap-around large multi reflector halogen headlamps at the two corners of the grille showcase elegance. The large front bumper below just cannot go unnoticed as it has wide air dams upfront together with spherical fog lamps and a substantial ground clearance that reflects confidence in stance. The side profile is very urbane with wing mirrors that have integrated turn indicators, whilst the sharp body cladding, sophisticated set of roof rails, roof mounted sporty antenna and sturdy pairs of alloy wheels leave no stone unturned in making it look macho from either side. Moreover, there is side step for easy entry and exit of the passengers. The rear of Toyota Hilux is quite soothing with black-painted large open space that has thick roll bars to grab/grip or tie your outsized luggage. While for hassle free loading and unloading of goods/belongings, the tailgate can also be opened. For more convenience, just below the right sized tail lamps there is a wide foot step for ease.

Exterior Measurements

As soon as Toyota Hilux arrives ‘large’ is the befitting complement. It measures a huge 5260 mm in length, 1835 mm in width and 1860 mm in height. The long size is a result of extensive wheel base that measures 3085 mm.

Depending up on the trim levels Toyota has tailored the wheels and tyres. The base model has 15-inch steel wheels with tyre size of 207/70 R15C 6JJ, while the mid variant has similar tyre size but has 16-inch steel wheels. Moving to the top end model, it has large 17-inch alloy wheels with tyre size of 265/65 R17 7.5J.

The two diesel engines of Toyota Hilux deliver upright mileage. Moreover, the 2.5-litre diesel engine extracts a fuel efficiency of nearly 11 kmpl and 14 kmpl in city and highway in that order.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Toyota Hilux pickup truck is presented in single fuel choice of diesel. However, the company has intelligently provided its diesel engine with a variety of displacements and power tune choice. The larger displacement 3.0L, 2982cc diesel engine has 4-cylinder 16V DOHC (double over-head camshaft) variable nozzle turbo with intercooler. This engine pulls out a maximum power of 163 PS at 3400 rpm and a high torque of 343 Nm at 1400-3200 rpm. Mated with the choice of either 4-speed automatic transmission with ECT (gate type) or 5-speed manual transmission gearbox, this engine has got avant-garde direct injection common rail (D-4D) fuel system.
A bit less powerful engine, i.e. the 2.5L, 2494cc diesel engine with 4-cylinder, 16V DOHC (double over-head camshaft) turbo comes in two power tunes. The lower power tune is of 102 PS at 3600 rpm alongside a peak torque of 200 Nm at 1400-3400 rpm. Whereas, the other combination is a maximum power of 144 PS at 3400 rpm together with highest torque of 343 Nm at 1600-2800 rpm. Both the different state of power tunes are coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox.

Both the engines of Toyota Hilux give out amazing power numbers. The big brother 3.0-litre diesel engine, available in single tune, churns out a maximum power of 163 PS at 3400 rpm. Whereas, the lower displacement engine of the two i.e. 2.5-litre is presented in two different power tunes. The 2.5-litre Hilux takes about 9-10 seconds to do a 0-100 kmph thing and it has got a top speed of 150-160 kmph. On the other hand, the heavier 3.0-litre version does its share of 100 kmph from standstill in mere 10-12 seconds alongside records a top speed of about 165-175 kmph
