Hilux Pros & Cons

Things We Like in Hilux

Toyota has always been known for its legendary reliability, and the Hilux has been the pioneer on that front. The Toyota Hilux has proven its unshakable prowess time and again, and the version which is available in the Philippines right now features the same mettle. The Hilux offers great levels of build quality and fit and finish, despite being a utilitarian vehicle, which is quite impressive.

Being a pickup truck, the Toyota Hilux has a very impressive cabin layout, which is rich in comfort and convenience features as well. The Toyota Hilux features quite a good number of new age features like a touch screen infotainment system, steering mounted audio and Bluetooth controls, automatic climate control and so on. This gives the Toyota Hilux a feel-good factor which people seldom expect from a pickup truck

Pickup trucks need to have a torquey engine to make it suitable for driveability in rough conditions, and the Toyota Hilux’s powertrain pass this test with flying colours. The Hilux’s 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine pumps out 174PS of power output and 450Nm of torque rating, which is powerful enough for a vehicle of this size.

Things We Dont Like in Hilux

The version of Toyota Hilux which is available in the Philippines right now is basically the previous generation one, which lacks the road presence in terms of modernity. It misses out on a number of eye-catching features which are fastly making their presence in the similarly priced pickup trucks from other manufacturers.

The Toyota Hilux’s engine performs excellently when it comes to outright power delivery, but the engine feels crude when it comes to refinement and fuel efficiency. The Hilux scores a bit low in both these aspects.

Recent Updates of Hilux

Toyota Hilux is one of the most popular and reliable pickup trucks that come with loads of features. The Philippines based Hilux comes with more powerful engine options and improved looks compared to the previous generation. The eighth-generation of this vehicle made its way onto the Philippine market, thanks to Toyota Motor Philippines. This vehicle is built on a platform that is shared between Innova and Fortuner. The suspension duties are handled by double-wishbone suspension in the front and a rigid axle with leaf springs at the rear.

Moving to the powertrain, the user can choose from a 2.4L 2GD-FTV or a 2.8L 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel engine. The 2.4L can churn out a maximum power of 147 Hp and a peak torque of 343 Nm. However, the 2.8L is capable of generating 174 hp and 450 Nm. The mill can be mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Overview

One of the most popular and oldest vehicles in the lineup of Toyota, the Hilux is a pick-up truck which was initially developed specifically for the American markets, but then later on, has been available in all the other markets around the world, owing to its popularity. Currently in its generation, the Hilux nameplate made its debut back in 1968 as a single cab pick-up truck. Given its usage cycle, the Toyota Hilux has gained a huge reputation worldwide for its immense practicality, rigidity and sturdiness, which are the foremost requirements for a pick-up truck. It is this durability factor of the Hilux which has made it favorite of popular militant groups in war torn regions of Middle East.

The current generation Toyota Hilux did receive a facelift in 2017, which saw the truck getting cosmetic upgrades both in and out, thus making the Hilux feel slightly more premium, especially from the inside. However, the 2.4 liter diesel engine and 2.8 liter diesel engine options have remained unchanged. Available in four 4x2 variants and two 4x4 variants with the options of manual and automatic transmissions, prices for the Toyota Hilux start at Php 8,14,000 for the base 4x2 J variant with manual transmission and goes all the way up to Php 16,21,000 for the top-spec 4x4 G variant with automatic transmission.

Interior & Features

On the inside, the Hilux does make up for the points lost for the design from the outside, with its premium and ergonomically designed cabin, which shares a lot of its layout with the current generation Fortuner and has a built-to-last feel in it. The dashboard layout has been lifted off from the Fortuner, although some premium features have been given a miss here to keep the costs in check. The three spoke steering wheel with buttons for audio system on it feels chunky and good to hold. The silver finish on the steering wheel, door panels and dashboard complemented with the all black interiors does look great as well. The center console too has a unique layout with the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system sitting proudly in the center, which does get Bluetooth, reverse camera and navigation system inbuilt in it.

In terms of comfort features, the Hilux comes equipped with all the basics, such as automatic climate control, rear AC vents, 4.2 inch TFT-type MID gauges and a number of cup holders, however, it does lack a number of premium features such as push button start with keyless entry, cruise control, etc which could have made it feel more premium on the inside. Just like the outside, again, the major emphasis has been kept over functionality and practicality, rather than flair.

Exterior

The currently available Toyota Hilux looks a lot like the previous generation Toyota Fortuner from the front, which is quite obvious considering the fact that both of them share a lot of underpinnings and components with each other. At the front, you do get a massive chrome grille with four large chrome slats which do give it a premium as well as a tough stance. This chrome grille blends in nicely with the large halogen headlamps. The front bumper is designed in a rather subtle manner without much drama. While this front view of the Hilux does look intimating and tough, it, however, lacks the novelty factor of its rivals, thanks to the absence of contemporary bits like projector headlamps and daytime running lights.

It is the side profile of the Hilux which is the best angle to look at, with the lifted stance complemented with the double cab design as well as a large loading bay. However, the alloy wheels could have been bigger than their original size here. The chrome finish on the door handles as well as rear view mirrors do give it a slight premium touch to the otherwise blandly designed side panels. The rear of the Hilux too looks drab with the tapered down tail lights being the only presentable design element here. However, the use of a generous amount of chrome on the rear bumper and rear door handle give the Hilux a slight premium touch here as well.

The overall focus of the design of the Hilux, thus, has emphasis purely on function rather than form, as the Hilux does have the required stance of a pick-up truck, but it lacks the premium feel and ‘wow’ factor which many new generation pick-up trucks, including the Hilux sold overseas, do possess.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

This is one department where the Toyota Hilux simply shines through and manages to make us go past over the shortcomings in its novelty and premium appeal. Under the hood, the Toyota Hilux is blessed with two engine options. The 4x2 variants of the Hilux are powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which belts out 147 bhp of power and 400 Nm of torque, while the 4x4 variants do get the sole option of a bigger 2.8-litre diesel engine, which puts up 174 bhp of maximum power and 450 Nm of peak torque.

Both the engines and drive layout options are powerful and sturdy enough to make the Hilux tractable and easily driveable in every kind of condition. Both the 4x2 and 4x4 variants do get the choice of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox to choose from.

Braking & Safety

Given its reputation of being a highly durable and tough vehicle, it is expected that the Hilux gets all the top-of-the-line safety features, but it doesn’t. Yes, you do get the basic essentials such as ABS with EBD, front, side, curtain and driver-side knee airbag and hill start assist control function. However, the Hilux could have been equipped with more premium active and passive safety features available in other SUVs from Toyota, which could have raised the appeal of the Hilux even more. However, the ladder-on-frame chassis and suspension setup of the Hilux is easily the sturdiest among all the vehicles available in this particular segment.
