Hilux Overview

The Toyota Hilux needs no introduction in the circuit of lifestyle and utility pickup trucks. The legendary vehicle from Toyota has gained an undoubted reputation of being a sturdy pickup that has been engineered to last long. The latest iteration of Toyota Hilux is being offered in two different versions – Standard and Conquest, which differ on the basis of styling enhancement and few features, which are additional in the latter.

Toyota Hilux Interior & Features

While there are a number of design changes in the exteriors of both the Standard and Conquest versions of the Toyota Hilux, the interior cabin of both the versions have the same layout.

The four-spoke multi-functional steering wheel with a squared center boss and a simple-looking instrument console with a colored MID in between has been completely shared with the Toyota Fortuner. However, the design of the center console is completely different from that of the Fortuner, with the Hilux getting a wraparound design for it.

Here, the center console houses sleek AC vents with an analog clock in the middle of them, a touchscreen infotainment system (8-inch unit in the Conquest and 6.5-inch in Standard), and a small panel for the automatic climate control. The cabin of both versions of the Toyota Hilux can seat five in comfort and with good space levels and is finished in black, with the Conquest version getting a more appealing ambient lighting for the door panels.

Hilux Exterior

This latest model of the Toyota Hilux has ditched the utilitarian appeal of the model it has replaced, and now not only looks butch but also quite contemporary. The Conquest version, with its bolder looking design enhancements and presence of few additional modern-day features, looks even more inviting.

The front profile of the Toyota Hilux consists of a huge bold looking front grille, which is shaped in the form of a trapezium with tapered lower edges, with a thick black horizontal garnish in the middle of it. The sweptback trapezoidal headlamps go well with the macho design of the front grille.

The front bumper, in contrast, looks a bit simpler and has small L-shaped fog lamp surrounds. The Conquest version looks much bolder in comparison, with the chrome garnish and central bigger black garnish in the front grille, big silver skid plate, squared inserts of the LED fog lamps, and inclusion of LED projector bulbs and daytime running LEDs in the headlamps.

The side profile of both the versions of the Toyota Hilux looks similar, with squared wheel arches and bulges over them, rounded edges for side windows, and footstep. The Conquest version adds in a tough-looking side body molding over wheel arches, blackened rearview mirrors and door handles, and sleek roof rails.

At the back, the Toyota Hilux gets a very minute revision for the vertically stacked tail lamps, which have tapering down design towards the sides. The door handle for the deck lid in the Conquest version gets black plastic surrounds and LED inserts for the tail lamps.

Toyota Hilux Ride & Handling

The Toyota Hilux has got a solid reputation for having that go-anywhere ability, with the great four-wheel drive system getting the assistance of multiple drive modes and the stiffly sprung double wishbone at the front and leaf spring rigid axle at the rear. However, this tough setup does take a toll on its ride quality and comfort over smoother surfaces, which feels a bit harsh.

Hilux Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Standard version of the Toyota Hilux is powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which gets both the options of 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearboxes. Here, this engine makes 150 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque.

The Conquest version, in addition to this engine, is also being offered with a 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which too is offered with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options. The peak power output of this engine is rated at 204 PS, however, it makes 420 Nm of torque with the manual and 500 Nm of torque with the automatic gearbox.

Toyota Hilux Braking & Safety

The Toyota Hilux gets a decent amount of safety features onboard, which includes the likes of front and knee airbags (additional curtain and side airbags in the Conquest version), ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, hill descent control, front and rear parking sensors and reverse camera.

Hilux Verdict

With that indestructible feel of the previous generation models, the Toyota Hilux now feels even more appealing, thanks to a more robust yet contemporary design and a much more comfortable cabin with modern-day features in and out.

The Toyota Hilux is the world’s best selling pickup truck outside America. The brawny 2.8-liter diesel engine is a big performer. In terms of power and torque, the Hilux has plenty. The bay area is large enough to carry all out weekend camping equipment. The driver’s cabin isn’t very comfortable. It still has a lot of space. The Hilux is Read More
