Overview

The Ford Ranger Raptor was being teased for quite some time in the Philippines market. The Ranger is a spin-off or rather an enhanced version of the Ford Ranger pick up. Ford Philippines did promise us last year that the Ranger will get a more powerful option in the Raptor sometime in 2018. The time has arrived and so has the Raptor. So, why was the Raptor built in the first place? It is because someone in Ford thought that the regular Ranger was way too plain for the audience. Instead, they decided to get the mechanical boffins to turn up the volume as well as power figures. The designers figured out beefier tyres as well as the bodywork. So, was born the Ford Ranger Raptor from Dearborn (pun unintended).

There are many colours to choose from. Some of the Ford Ranger Raptor colors include Lightning Blue, Race Red, Shadow Black, Frozen White, and  Conquer Grey. One can book the Ford Ranger Raptor at the nearest dealership right now. So, without further ado, here is the Ford Ranger Raptor review.

Interior & Features

The cabin of the 2018 Ford Raptor has undergone a sea change. The track-inspired instrument cluster from the Ranger series is a thing of the past now. In comes new pods and a central display. These are vividly lit up and a departure from the Ford blue we have been used to seeing on both the Everest as well as the Ranger pick up. They display a wide plethora of information as well. You will also end up noticing the new steering wheel with a whole lot of functions added. There are also the slick brushed aluminium paddle shifters. The Sync 3 infotainment system is a gem as far as music units are concerned. There are two bucket seats in the front and bench at the back. These bucket seats are powered and also feature electrical lumbar adjustment. The driver gets memory function too.

Dual-zone auto climate control, as well as rear AC vents, are standard. Besides this, there are also tow hooks, luggage holders as well as various cubby holes provided in the Raptor. The loading bay size is 1560 x 1743 mm. The Ranger can also tow 3.8 tonnes.

Build quality cannot be faulted even though this one is a pick up after all. The cabin feels plush and one sits very high as well. Getting into the cabin though takes some effort as even the side step will not be able to help those below 5ft 2 inches in height. Thankfully, there are handlebars on the roof to hold on from inside.

Exterior

If looks could literally kill, then the Raptor was born to do it. The face has that huge logo done up in black and in case you don’t know which maker the Ranger comes from, proclaims it too. The aluminium bash plate under the front bumper seems eons of distance away from the ground. It basically protects the engine from stray rocks or boulders while off-roading. The tyres are all-terrain BF Goodrich units. Ford has also upsized the wheels to 18-inches now. The side steps too have gone up in length. If you’ve issues with overhangs, this one will give you a massive headache. The overhangs protrude out quite a lot here. The tail light has been slightly revised but not that you will want to take heed of it. In terms of dimensions, the Ranger Raptor 2018 measures 5,398 mm x 2,180 mm x 1,873 mm in length, width and height respectively. The ground clearance is a massive 283 mm.

Ride & Handling

The new Ford Raptor uses a Fox-sourced suspension as well as a performance-oriented setup. The 2.5-inch thick shock absorbers also support the Baja mode that allows the vehicle to just land on its tyres without any subsequent damage to the underbelly or the shockers. The rear suspension has 296 mm of travel while the front ones have 250 mm. Instead of the leaf springs in the Ranger, this one uses coil springs.

The Ford Raptor 2018 has a wide range of modes to play with from its new Terrain Response system. Along with the aforementioned Baja mode, this one also brings in the usual Snow, Gravel, Rain, Road and more options. It is a fly on the wheel system. The ride quality, as a result, is a bit bouncy if you are travelling alone. However, load the vehicle up and she will absorb every single rut or pothole with a finesse. The handling in the meanwhile is fairly okay. However, considering the high centre of gravity that accompanies the Raptor, things should be taken with a bit of caution.

We like the steering of the vehicle. In spite of the lofty proportions, the steering wheel is good to hold and decently light as well. It weighs up once the speeds increase.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

This is a new engine and transmission that Ford is using in the Philippines Raptor. It is a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine that makes a modest 215 PS of power and a massive 500 Nm of torque. This may not really sound much given that a certain Chevrolet pick-up makes the same amount of power. What is unique though is a 10-speed transmission. The Ranger Raptor is perhaps the world’s only production pick up that uses a 10-speed gearbox. The gearbox wants to shift into higher gears as early as possible. So, it is quite natural to see the speedometer needle at 50 kmph and the gear meter showing 5th gear. At 90 kmph, you are already in 8th gear and 100 brings in the 10th gear. Mileage, as a result, is a lofty claimed at 19 kmpl.

Using the paddle shifters help you in controlling the gear according to your whims and fantasies. The power is transmitted to all the four wheels, however sensing the road conditions, the Raptor will also become a pure rear wheel drive car.

Braking & Safety

The Ford Raptor specifications point at a massive equipment list. Parking the Raptor is a no-brainer since it comes with the niceties associated with the Ranger. This includes a surround camera, parallel park assist, front sensors and rearview camera. Ford will also give you a blind spot warning system, ABS with EBD, six airbags, rollover protection, ESP, hill hold assist, lane departure warning, ISOFIX child seat mounts amongst others.

Verdict

The Ford Ranger Raptor has taken a long time in coming over to the Philippines market. It should have been here right from the beginning given that Ford manufactures it for the left-hand drive markets predominantly. The Ford Ranger Raptor price starts from Php 1,898,000. This is a steep price to pay, however, at the moment, there is no other massive, capable as well as well-built pick up out there in the market.
