Toyota Avanza (2010)
The Avanza is a popular car among Filipino families thanks to its seven-seater capacity. This MPV blends together practicality and affordability without compromising on style and performance. Toyota recently gave the model a modern facelift to give it its new city car appearance, featuring a sleeker and more subtle design. Second-hand car buyers love the Avanza thanks to its focus on both utility and comfort, making it a versatile vehicle for various vehicle needs. Be it a family or a business car, the Avanza can certainly do both.
There are two powertrain options for the Avanza. The 1.3-litre gasoline engine generates 95 hp and 121 Nm of torque, while the 1.5-litre produces 103 hp and 136 Nm of torque. For those who want a low maintenance, no-fuss entry-level family car, a second-hand Rio is a great choice.
The 2003-2005 model is powered by a 1.6-litre that generates 104 hp and is mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed F4A-EL automatic transmission. Earlier versions were equipped with a smaller 1.5-litre gasoline engine that produces 96 hp.

Hyundai Eon (2012-2016)
The Hyundai Eon was first introduced back in 2012 and ended its run around 2016. While short-lived, second-hand models of the subcompact vehicle remain a favorite by small families thanks to its low maintenance requirements and excellent fuel efficiency. Hyundai introduced the GLX variant sometime in 2016 which replaced its earlier GL and GS trims. The GLX combined the key features of both variants and bumped up some of its specs to make it more attractive in the competitive subcompact segment.
The Eon is powered by a 0.8-litre 3-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 56 hp and 75 Nm of torque. This is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Some convenience features that can be found inside is a user-friendly instrument panel and five cup holders. It also includes a 1-DIN unit with CD, MP3, and AUX. It doesn’t have much in terms of safety features but it is equipped with airbags for both the driver and passenger.

Toyota Yaris (2000)
The introduction of the second-generation Yaris was Toyota’s comeback from its failure with the Echo back in the early 2000s. This subcompact hatchback shares numerous similarities with one of its most successful siblings, the Vios sedan. While the earlier Yaris entered the market with a vibrant identity, the second-generation featured a sharper and sleeker design language reminiscent of French cars. This allowed it to stand out in the market and was favored by young professionals for its excellent cabin and storage space, as well as its multitude of convenience features.
A 1.3-litre gasoline engine powers the Yaris and delivers a revvy 84 hp. This is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is decent and comparable to 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre competitors. When on the highway, fuel economy is similar to the 1.3-litre Vios. Inside, there are soft seats and numerous cubby spaces as well as two ISOFIX points in the rear.
Kia Picanto (2004)
The Picanto was Kia’s replacement for the Visto back in 2004. At the time, it was much smaller than the Honda Jazz. However, its introduction spurred on the mini hatchback craze and lead to the entry of various other models from different carmakers. What’s great about the Picanto is it was strategically designed to have everything the driver needs within reach. It’s also got excellent interior room for four passengers despite its small size.
A simple 1.1-litre g4H6 engine powers the Picanto which delivers 64 hp and 94 Nm of torque. While this is lacking compared to most vehicles today, it remains capable for daily city driving. Inside is a standard 1-DIN audio system and split-folding rear seats which allow for extra cargo space when needed. This is an ideal second-hand vehicle for those who are looking for a simple but reliable first car.
Suzuki Celerio (2015)
The introduction of the Celerio marked Suzuki’s entry into the subcompact hatchback segment. The Celerio sits right in the middle of Suzuki’s subcompact range and features a small, 3.5-meter long body. Recent iterations have now given it some added length and even some new aerodynamic features. This vehicle boasts practicality with its folding rear seats and its multitude of storage cubbies around the inside. The bubble-shaped roofline also provides ample headroom, making it comfortable for passengers.
Both the second and third generations of the hatchback are powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine which is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Besides more cargo space, the recent generation now includes an upgraded infotainment system that features a 7-inch touchscreen display. It is also equipped with standard safety features such as dual airbags, a defogger, and immobilizer.

Nissan Almera (2017-)
The Almera is Nissan’s entry into the subcompact sedan segment in the country. This vehicle was known as Nissan’s working-class hero for its simple but reliable design. What’s most notable about this vehicle is that it has the feel of a larger sedan thanks to its impressive headroom and legroom. It also offers so much cargo space, making it ideal for family trips and hauling materials. While it didn’t gain too much popularity, a second-hand Almera makes for an excellent family car thanks to its practicality and ride comfort.
The vehicle is powered by a 1.5-litre gasoline engine which produces 99 hp and 134 Nm of torque and can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Nissan recently began offering a 1.2-litre engine with 5-speed manual transmission for its base variants. The Almera also has impressive fuel economy figures, especially when on the highway.

Hyundai Accent (2010)
The subcompact Accent sports a fluid-like silhouette and comes in either a hatchback or a sedan body style. Earlier iterations had a more old-school design which lost some favor from the subcompact segment for some time. However, recent upgrades from Hyundai have made it a premium contender in the local market and added to its overall ride comfort.
Two engine options are available for buyers to choose from. The 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine generates 126 hp and 260 Nm of torque, while the naturally aspirated 1.4-litre gasoline engine produces 98 hp and 132 Nm of torque. These can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Inside is a 3.8-inch LCD display with AUX and USB, as well as a manual climate control system. The vehicle is also equipped with dual SRS airbags for the front.
Honda City (2010)
The Honda City is a trailblazer that launched the local subcompact sedan market. Models from 2010 and onwards have retained the most modern and the most recognizable design style in the segment. It’s a mature vehicle that looks and feels premium without compromising on practicality, which is the main reason why a second-hand City remains a favorite for car buyers.
A 1.5-litre engine powers this popular sedan and produces 118 hp and 148 Nm of torque. This generation also features Honda’s i-VTEC engine series which delivers better power while preserving fuel economy. Depending on the variant, you can get either a 2DIN audio system or an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Higher variants also come with more tech features such as cruise control. The City is well-equipped with safety features such as a driver airbag, a front passenger airbag, and side airbags.
