MPTC encounters data breach

MANILA: Metro Pacific Tollway Corporation (MPTC) has encountered a data breach that potentially compromised information and related data of Easytrip account holders.

According to a social media post uploaded on the tollway company’s official Facebook account, it noted that it was “investigating a potential data breach.”

The said security-related issue — MPTC noted — has affected its systems.

However, the toll firm guaranteed its customers that its cybersecurity team is working to identify the extent of the potential breach and ensure the security of its clients.

“Our information security and data privacy teams are on full alert. We will provide updates as more information becomes available,” it wrote.

In a later update, MPTC assured its customers that the data breach has been contained by the company’s Information Security Team.

And while MPTC mentioned that “some user accounts may have been accessed and possibly compromised,” it stated that the toll wallet balances of Easytrip account holders are intact and secure.

MPTC explained that it will reach out to the affected account holders.

Coincidentally, the hacking of MPTC’s systems happened after the Department of Transportation, Land Transportation Office, and Toll Regulatory Board signed a Joint Memorandum Circular that penalizes toll road users with no radio frequency identification sticker toll payment systems or with insufficient balances.
