iCAUR V23: 1st impressions

iCAUR Philippines is poised to unleash its initial offerings in the country soon.

And with the anticipation building around the arrival of the two electrified sport utility vehicles (SUV), Zigwheels Philippines took a quick look at what these boxy automobiles have to offer to help interested car buyers understand what they are in for, aesthetically. 

On that note, here are our first impressions of the iCAUR V23.

iCAUR V23

Exterior

The iCAUR V23 is a compact SUV that boasts classic segment styling. 

At the fore is a no-nonsense fascia with minimalist grillework and a pair of rounded automatic LED headlights. At the lower portion of the vehicle’s front end is a chunky bumper where the millimeter-wave (MMW) radars are fitted.

Black cladding surrounds the lower front frame of the iCAUR V23, which not only serves added cosmetic flair, but also provides the vehicle with added forward underbody protection.

The same purposeful design treatment can be observed on the SUV’s flanks. Under the flared wheel arches are plastic coverings that protect the side’s common touch points, as well as durable-looking side sill garnishes that sit right above the vehicle’s step boards. 

Its door handles are flush with the surface and require a “push-and-pull” method of operation. Time will tell if this design choice will age well. Like the windows, the blacked-out side mirrors are also squarish.

The iCAUR V23 rides on a set of 19 or 21-inch wheels slapped with 255/55 or 255/45-series tires, respectively. The wheels have a five-spoke design with modern touches. The writer appreciates that it comes in a monotone finish, but the overall appearance could be improved. Rally-style wheels, such as the Rota Recce, would be a good look. 

At the back is a decent-sized window fitted on a rear door that—in classic SUV fashion—opens sideways. There is no spare tire mount, but there is a small box that can hold small items such as recovery tools. 

Further, the lights are positioned low and close to the bumper, but there seem to be provisions for taillamps that can be mounted at the same level as the beltline. Is iCAUR encouraging future modifications for the V23? We might know soon. 

Some rear underbody defense can also be observed thanks to the skid plate-like appointment under the bumper, which also gets a pair of MMW radars.

Interior 

The cabin of the iCAUR V23 offers the ideal mix of utility and modern technology. 

In front of the driver is a three-spoke wheel with minimal controls. Past it is the column-mounted shifter paired with a lever for operating the lights and window wipers. Taking center stage is the large display screen where most of the features can be accessed.

The writer found an application icon called “Game Mode,” and when opened, it displays the message “Please use DP cable to connect Switch device.” It was a shame the correspondent did not bring his Nintendo Switch OLED, but it could have been sweet to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on the iCAUR V23. 

Physical controls can still be found under the infotainment screen and in between the visors on the headliner, which make adjustments to the SUV’s cabin climate and drive modes easy and straightforward. 

The seats are swathed in leather, and added convenience is provided for the driver thanks to electronic controls. An open center console gives the iCAUR V23 a roomy feel, but even with its modular organization panels, the front row could look cluttered if items pile up on the furniture. 

Seats at the back get the same leather treatment—with perforation to make room for more airflow at the back portion. There is only room for four occupants in the second row, and there is no pull-down armrest for those sitting in this space.

Off-road easter eggs 

The iCAUR V23 has several easter eggs for those who like to go off the beaten path. 

At the windshield’s bottom left corner near the driver’s seat is an image of an off-road SUV. The same silhouette can be found on the dashboard on the driver’s side near the infotainment unit.

Meanwhile, the “BORN TO PLAY” metal applique can be found on the dashboard cubby on the front passenger’s side. 

Overall, the design of the iCAUR V23 would suit the tastes of those who prefer to go places where other vehicles couldn’t. Its boxy dimensions, paired with design cues that mix classic SUV and modern car elements, make it a good choice for the modern adventurer. 

Outside off-roading 

While it appears that the iCAUR V23 is being touted in the Philippines as an electric SUV that can take on mild off-roading, the vehicle has been used for conquering the narrow city streets of China. 

The vehicle has been dressed up for drifting in Wuhu Drift, a short film that pays homage to the Fast and  Furious franchinse.  

Some add ons include an oversized carbon-fiber racing wing, roof-mounted auxiliary lighting, side aero elements, a high-saturation geometric racing livery, white multi-spoke wheels, and a wide-body treatment. 

Powering your future adventures 

The iCAUR V23 is yet to make its official Philippine debut, yet is already stirring interest among people who favor vehicles that can do more than just crawl malls.
