Hyundai Grand Starex was launched in the year 1997, its been two decades since then, but there is no looking back for this model. After its widespread popularity and success, the Grand Starex was then presented as a refreshed version in the year 2007. The revamped design and layout played really well for the van. The new version also gained mass acclamation and has satisfied many of its customer bases.
With all the overhauling and upgradation, Grand Starex looks like a modern-day van and with a powerful 2.5-litre TCI and 2.5-litre CRDi at its heart, it delivers a powerful performance. For the Philippines market, the Grand Starex comes for a hefty price of Php 1.4 million.
Coming to the interior aesthetics of the van, you see a contrasting beige theme done inside. The seats are designed for the utmost comfort of the occupants and are wrapped with soft material upholstery. The steering wheel of the driver comes with a shiny leather wrap, offering a good grip over the wheel. The wheel comes with usual audio controls and behind it lies the tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge, and engine temperature monitor.
The centre instrument console looks like it is stacked with too many of elements, instead of looking neatly placed. It contains AC vents, and a 7-inch infotainment system containing all ubiquitous features like AM/FM, radio, CD, USB, and AUX. Below it lies the gear lever which forms a prominent part of the dashboard. The interior space also has smartly designed container boxes to store items of utility.
The cabin also has ample space to provide comfortable legroom and headroom to its occupants. Also, the boot space is enough to adjust the seats by utilizing the foldable features.
While the revamping process was carried out, only the GLS variant was worked upon to give it a refreshingly new exterior. Talking about the front fascia of the Grand Starex, it catches your attention with two large halogen headlamps which are placed exactly at the right place to offer good illumination. Though the use of halogens is very conventional, still the way they are placed looks like a very distinctive feature. The front also dons a radiator chrome grille which looks utterly premium and classy. The Hyundai brand logo is smartly placed at the centre of the horizontal chrome slats. The front bumper is not coloured as per the colour of the van but matches with the cladding on the vehicles, which is painted in hues of black.
Coming to the side profile of the van, it also looks pretty elegant if you look at it from the front. The creases and lines all over the van are just neatly drawn and look like a perfect styling hue. The large-sized van rides on 16-inch alloy wheels, which could have been bigger to carry the load of the van.
The rear profile of the van has a big windscreen with a wiper, as its main attraction. The only other prominent element at the rear is a roof-mounted spoiler.
The suspension set-up of the Grand Starex inculcates MacPherson w/ Coil Spring at the front and Rigid Axle 5-Link w/ Coil Spring at the rear. They together handle potholes and bumps on the roads to offer you a good quality ride.
The Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS) works in synchronization to give the driver feedback on what the front wheels are doing.
The Hyundai Grand Starex comes with two engine options. The first one is a 2.5-litre TCI engine that sparks 100 PS of power and 225 Nm of torque. It comes only with a 5-speed manual transmission. The other engine is a 2.5-litre CRDi unit which generates 170 PS and 441 Nm of torque at 2000 to 2250 revs.
In terms of performance, the CRDi engine is efficient due to its capability of sparking a high torque output at low revs. This allows the Grand Starex to get going from a standstill and even fly at high speeds without stressing the engine. You can easily expect to get around 12-13 kmpl from the CRDi unit which is a pretty good fuel-efficiency.
Grand Starex has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. Also, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) aids in enhancing braking performance. In terms of safety features, we get an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), dual airbags, keyless entry with alarm, and reverse parking sensors.
Hyundai Grand Starex is capable of being called a family van. It has a dominance in the market for more than two decades now. The van has ample space to accommodate 10 people comfortably. Considering its boot space, this van can easily be used as a business vehicle. With a starting price of Php 1.4 million, the Grand Starex is a good bet to play on.
