SYM Maxsym 400i Review 2024

With the SYM Maxsym 400i, the Taiwanese two-wheeler major aims squarely at those people who are aspiring to get their first-ever proper big or maxi scooter. The SYM Maxsym 400i is being offered in the Philippines in a standard variant, which has been made available with four different color options – White, Black, Grey and Bronze.

SYM Maxsym 400i Design

The SYM Maxsym 400i has got a big and authoritative stance to start with, which is the first and foremost trait essentially required for a maxi scooter. This tall and wide stance of the SYM Maxsym 400i is easy to bring more and more people towards the world of maxi-scooters, however, the design of the scooter feels a bit old and dated by today’s standards.

The large and bulbous front stance of the SYM Maxsym 400i has a curvaceous V-shaped front apron design, which accommodates slanted headlamps on the center, which are quite big in size and have rounded edges. Sadly though, these headlamps do not look modern enough, for they lack the in-trend all LED lighting technology, and instead get large bezels for halogen headlamps.

The front apron forms a curved extension of the side profile, which from sides has an impression of S-shaped panels on the front side edges of the scooter. The large partitioned floorboard with vertically slim knee recesses ahead on the back portion of the apron and large split seat design with dedicated backrests for both the rider as well as pillion are the typical maxi-scooter traits one looks for a scooter of this size.

The large rear side body panels below the big seat of the SYM Maxsym 400i have a bulged out design, which taper upwards while moving to the rear. At the back, the SYM Maxsym 400i gets a horizontally split design for the LED tail lamp cluster, which has L-shaped LED inserts for the main tail lamps. The split pillion grab rails placed just above the tail lamp cluster too are quite large and go well with the big and wide stance of the scooter.

The SYM Maxsym 400i large seat has a split design, but opens up as a whole single unit, with a huge under-seat storage compartment – big enough to house two small helmets within it. The rider’s cockpit of the SYM Maxsym 400i looks wide and comprehensive with rounded analog dials for speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge and temperature gauge, with a round blue backlit LCD panel placed in the middle showing a host of data including odometer, trip meters, clock and distance to empty. The clip-on handlebars of the scooter feel nice and wide, which are ergonomically well placed even for taller riders.

Maxsym 400i Ride & Handling

The SYM Maxsym 400i has got a very accommodating and comfortable persona to it, thanks to its huge size and suspension setup of hydraulic telescopic forks at the front and unit swing arm and mono-shock at the rear. The wide handlebar and soft setup for the suspension injects an essence of a comfortable tourer in the SYM Maxsym 400i, which is good and friendly enough even for the urban commutes as well. Riding on a 15-inch front wheel and a 14-inch rear wheel, the scooter gets dual 275 mm disc brakes at the front and a single 275 mm disc brake at the rear.

SYM Maxsym 400i Engine & Fuel Consumption

Under the skin of the SYM Maxsym 400i, the scooter is powered by a four-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, 399cc engine, which is paired to a CVT gearbox as expected. The engine is adequately powerful, with the maximum power and torque outputs rated at 35.5 PS and 36.2 Nm respectively. The top speed rated of the scooter is 145 kmph.

Maxsym 400i Braking & Safety

The fantastic braking setup of the SYM Maxsym 400i, with dual 275mm discs at the front and a single 275mm disc at the rear, gets a dual-channel ABS as standard. Apart from that, the scooter also gets a key shutter mechanism for the ignition keyhole.

SYM Maxsym 400i Verdict

The large and bulbous design of the SYM Maxsym 400i might not have that eye-catching modernity, but it has a stance big enough to make this entry-level maxi scooter feel rich. Being good on all the practical parameters like enough storage spaces, comfortable ride quality and ergonomics and a refined and powerful motor make the SYM Maxsym 400i a value for money entry-level maxi scooter.
