Yamaha has been a very active player in the two-wheeler market of the Philippines and has a large number of vehicles in its portfolio from scooters, underbones to motorcycles. Noticing the popularity of maxi-scooters across the globe, Yamaha decided to launch the NMax in the Philippines market and just like the Honda PCX, it instantly became a favourite of the Filipinos. This stylish commuter poses a very fresh and appealing design with a large front apron and a big windshield. Power comes from a 155cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-valve, single cylinder, SOHC engine that churns 14.8 hp and peak torque of 14.4 Nm, mated to a V-Belt automatic transmission. In order to enhance the engine performance, Yamaha has also powered the engine with Blue Core technology and Variable Valve Actuation. With a fuel tank capacity of 6.6 litres, the scooter can return a fuel economy of 35 kmpl as per company claims. Other noteworthy features include a full-digital instrument console, large under seat storage and a triple lamp LED headlight. It is offered in two variants- standard and ABS priced at Php 109,000 and Php 119,000 respectively. As far as the colour options are concerned, there’s Midnight Black and Gunmetal Gray for both the standard and the ABS variants, while an additional blue colour is offered in standard variant. The NMax primarily competes against the Honda PCX.

It’s the looks that grab your attention at first sight. Yamaha has infused a futuristic and classy design language in the NMax. Starting up front, you will find a big apron that houses a triple lamp LED headlight along with LED turn indicators placed below it. There’s a large windshield right above the headlight and the long handlebar holds edgy rear view mirrors. Sides don’t feature any loud graphics and there’s a 3D NMax logo placed below the pillion seat. The seat looks premium and comfy with a little wave on it. At the rear, you can spot an LED tail lamp along with a single grab rail. Interestingly, the engine is placed below the floorboard and is covered by the body of the scooter. The Midnight Black paint scheme features copper colour alloy wheels which look quite distinct and stunning.

Ride & Handling

Built on a backbone frame, the NMax comes with telescopic front forks and rear unit swing as part of the suspension setup. A premium wide seat is placed at 765mm from the ground. Riding is very comfortable owing to its strong frame, reliable suspension and premium quality wide seat. However, the seat height is a little low and taller people may experience some discomfort while riding. With a wet weight of 127 kg, the Nmax offers light and nimble handling. To add to that, its small turning radius makes it perfect for heavy traffic conditions.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Yamaha is known to power its vehicles with long lasting and better-performing engines and that goes with the NMax as well. It draws power from a 155cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-valve, single cylinder, SOHC engine that generates a max power of 14.8 hp at 8,000 rpm and peak torque of 14.4 Nm at 6,000 rpm. Power is relayed to the rear wheel through a V-Belt automatic transmission. The engine also features Yamaha’s Blue Core technology and Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) to make it perform better. Under VVA, at a certain RPM, the fuel intake of the engine is adjusted, thereby resulting in strong torque at low speeds and power at high speeds. That said, Yamaha claims that the NMax can return a fuel economy of up to 35 kmpl which is a tad less considering the technology Yamaha has used in the engine to make it more efficient.

Braking & Safety

Braking duties are performed by single discs at both ends with ABS as an option if you are willing to shell out extra Php 10,000. Attached to the 13-inch alloy wheels shod with tubeless tyres, the brakes are very much capable of bringing the scooter to a still even at high speeds.

Yamaha Nmax - The big and best

Killer Design, hugely economical and a power ride, pretty much sums up this Yamaha model. Its motto ‘ride life to the max’ is really apt for the amazing service this two-wheeler provides. It gets pretty cold and foggy up here in Baguio and the Nmax’s adjustable headlight settings really make it a worthy purchase. I usually don’t need more than Read More
