Yamaha Motor Company Limited is a Japanese manufacturer of motorcycles, marine products such as boats and outboard motors, and other motorized products. The company was established in 1955 upon separation from Yamaha Corporation and is headquartered in Iwata, Shizuoka, Japan. The company conducts development, production, and marketing operations through 109 consolidated subsidiaries.
The motorcycle division of Yamaha was founded in 1955 and was headed by Genichi Kawakami. Yamaha's initial product was a 125cc (7.6 cu in) two-cycle, single-cylinder motorcycle, the YA-1, which was a copy of the German DKW RT 125. However, it was in 1968 when Yamaha launched its first four-stroke motorcycle, the XS-1.
It was in early 2007 when Commencement of manufacturing and sales of motorcycles at Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc (YMPH) began in the Philippines. Following which, on April 4, 2008, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. began construction today on a new motorcycle factory in the Lima Industrial Park in Batangas State by investing 960 million pesos (approx. 2.5 billion yen) for construction.
YMPH began its first full-fledged manufacturing operations in January 2009 with a starting production capacity of 150,000 motorcycle units annually and an initial workforce of approximately 270.
According to Yamaha Motor Global’s 2016 Fact Book, motorcycles with 125cc of displacement are the main choice of the public in the ASEAN region, including the Philippines. On average at least 100,000 Yamaha motorcycles are sold in the Philippines on a year-end basis. Yamaha currently has a 14 percent market share of the motorcycle industry in the country.
