Yamaha XTZ 125

In terms of dimensions, the Yamaha XTZ 125 measures 2,090 mm in length, 830 mm in width, 1,115 mm in overall height, and 840 mm in seat height. It has a wheelbase of 1,340 mm and a minimum ground clearance of 260 mm. Its seat height might be a bit of an issue for the average Filipino rider (under 6ft). But, on the plus side, its ground clearance enhances its ability to pass through large bumps and rocky off-road terrains. 

The Yamaha XTZ 125’s design exudes a mix of youthfulness and sportiness on the road. It has a confident-looking facade illuminated by a halogen head lamp with a bright, white light system that delivers great visibility, especially at night. It also comes with indicator lights. And, like its dual-sport cousins, it also sports a sharp beak, which enhances its ruggedness.

Riders are given a classic-looking analogue meter panel that also comes with the turn signal, high beam indicators, and neutral lamp. This bike comes with a dual straight seat that provides decent cushioning and ergonomics for both the rider and the pillion. However, larger passengers might find its seat a bit uncomfortable on longer rides due to its narrow and thin frame. But, to be fair, this bike is designed more for solo riding. For convenience and an added layer of practicality, this bike has a carrier at the back for light cargo. 

Furthermore, its sporty side profile is enhanced by sharp fairings and bright-coloured motorsport graphics. This dual-sport motorcycle runs on a 21-inch wheel at the front and an 18-inch at the rear. It also has a sharp-looking rear illuminated by an integrated bulb-type tail lamp and signal lights.

The Yamaha XTZ 125 utilizes a suspension combination of a front Telescopic Fork and a rear Swingarm. This suspension setup allows this dual-sport motorcycle to have light and nimble maneuverability both on and off-road. For an off-road bike, it is simple and easy to operate. You can confidently hit sharp turns or corners with this bike. Plus, it effortlessly absorbs rocky and bumpy terrains, leading to a stable and relaxing riding experience overall. 

The Yamaha XTZ 125 is powered by a 124-cc, air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve, single-cylinder engine that produces a maximum power output of 10.2 PS and a maximum torque of 9.9 Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed constant mesh (manual) transmission gearbox.

Its engine has enough power and torque for light to moderate off-road trails. However, when it comes to very steep hills or trails, its outputs are a bit limited. Meanwhile, on-road, it can still deliver a nice pull off the line. Plus, it runs smoothly and quietly even at high speeds thanks to Yamaha’s proprietary internal balancer technology, which reduces engine noise and vibration. And, on top of this, despite having a carburetor supply system, this dual-sport motorcycle can still deliver a solid fuel economy–proving that it is indeed usable on a daily basis. 

In terms of safety, the Yamaha XTZ 125 comes with a pass switch and an engine guard. This dual-sport motorcycle uses a hydraulic single disc brake at the front, while a mechanical leading trailing drum brake at the rear. Its braking setup delivers a decent stopping power at high speeds.

In my opinion, the Yamaha XTZ 125 is a solid choice for a first off-road bike. Apart from its high seat height, almost everything about it is simple, straightforward, and novice-friendly. It offers a confidence-inspiring ride (in terms of handling) and just the right amount of power  and torque.
