EV Love: Diving into Audi, Bentley HEV models
Audis and Bentleys as recognized by the DOE
In the month of February, we are exploring the lineup of new energy vehicles (NEV) in our country. Yes, the whole lot.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What are the HEV models of Audi as recognized by the DOE?
The DOE’s list of recognized HEV models sold by Audi in the Philippines are the A8 L, Q7, Q8, and Q8 RS.What Bentley models in the Philippines are recognized as HEVs by the DOE?
Bentley models in the Philippines that are recognized as HEVs by the DOE are the Flying Spur Hybrid, Continental GT Speed, and Continental GT Azure.Zigwheels Philippines is currently doing this in our feature story series called “EV Love,” which is appropriate considering the prevailing theme of the season, and that hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV) are currently seeing a lot of love in the local market, relatively speaking.
Previously, we listed all the HEV models in the local market as recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE).
But to dive in further, let’s talk about the individual hybrid powertrains of these nameplates, starting with Audi and Bentley - two luxury vehicle marques with a bunch of HEV offerings jotted down by DOE.
Audi
A8 L
One of the largest sedans in Audi Philippines’ stable is the A8 L. Appropriately, it is provided with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine paired with a 48-volt hybrid system.

It's been around since 2017, but it's peppy mill delivering 335 horsepower (hp) and 500 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. Power is sent to all four of its wheels via an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission.
Q7
Headlining Audi’s crossover offerings is the Q7, a midsize model that can accommodate up to seven people.
Photo from AudiFor the said task, the crossover uses a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engine paired with an all-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential, and a 48-volt hybrid system. At maximum, this mill can put out similar output figures as the Audi A8 L sedan.
Q8
Also listed in the DOE under Audi is the Q8, specifically the RS trim. Unlike the two mentioned above, the Q8 uses a beefier 4.0-liter turbocharged V8, which also features a 48-volt hybrid system.

The regular Q8, on the other hand, sports a similar powertrain and output figures to those of the Q7 and A8 L.

Bentley
Flying Spur Hybrid
Another brand that has HEV models in its lineup is Bentley. Unlike Audi, however, Bentley is on another level when it comes to engine cylinder count, power outputs, and price.
Photo from BentleyThe Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid that’s recognized by the DOE, for example, uses a huge 4.0-liter V8 engine paired with a 25.9 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery and an electric motor. In total, this system can put out 670 hp and 930 Nm of torque. Its electric motor alone delivers 187 hp and 450 Nm of torque.
For its transmission, the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid four-seater, four-door sedan uses an all-wheel-drive system together with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Bentley Continental GT Speed
Apart from the Flying Spur, Bentley also has the Continental GT Speed, a two-seater, two-door grand touring car.
Photo from BentleyLike its four-door sibling, the Continental GT Speed also utilizes a 4.0-liter V8 hybrid powertrain, but it has a beefier total output of 771 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque.
On paper, the two-door Bentley has the same all-wheel-drive system, transmission, twin-scroll turbo, and electric motor as the Flying Spur, but it has a much more aggressive tune.
Bentley Continental GT Azure
The Bentley Continental GT Azure is a variant of the Continental GT Speed. Similar to the abovementioned, it also sports a 4.0-liter V8 but with a “less aggressive” total output similar to that of the four-door Flying Spur Hybrid.
Photo from BentleyLikewise available to the Continental GT Azure is an all-wheel-drive system, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and a 25.9 kWh battery.
Final thoughts
So, there you have it, the HEV models of Audi and Bentley. All of these are very peppy rides, albeit on the pricier side of things.
Then again, high-performance hybrids like this have been touted by many manufacturers as “the future.” Bentley, for example, has ditched its internal-combustion-only W12 engines, which were massive gas guzzlers in comparison to the high-performance hybrids we’ve listed above.
Audi, meanwhile, has scaled back its high-performance “TDI” diesel engines for various reasons.
