Audi to bring ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ in F1 by 2026

MANILA: Audi is set to make its debut at the FIA Formula 1 World Championship starting next year.

In a statement, the German automaker will bring its “Vorsprung durch Technik” philosophy to the pinnacle of motorsport — marking another milestone in Audi’s history and focusing its expertise and resources on competing at the highest level.

The company is set to compete under the Revolut Audi F1 Team after taking over the Kick Sauber entry.

Audi’s participation in the competition will also provide another first in the Formula 1 record books as its power unit will be the first in the racing series that is developed and built in Germany.

Per Audi, the powertrain is a combination of a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor that is almost as powerful as a pure combustion mill. The increased output from the electric motor means that more energy can be recovered through recuperation. The engine runs on sustainable fuels.

The Ingolstadt-headquartered marque added that its Formula 1 powertrain follows the various electrified systems the brand used in other motorsport projects, such as in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Formula E and the Dakar Rally.

Further, Audi mentioned that the Formula 1’s technical regulations for 2026 make the top race series more sustainable and cost-efficient as it aims to become carbon-neutral by 2030.

Manning the race cars for the team are:

• Nico Hulkenberg (Formula 1 veteran with 240 race starts)
• Gabriel Bortoleto (first-timer in the series who is a successive world champion in Formula 3 and Formula 2)

Leading the Audi F1 project is Mattia Binotto who is the concurrent chief operating officer and chief technical officer of Sauber Motorsport.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Wheatley (current Team Principal of Sauber Motorsport) is set to manage race operations as Sauber transitions into the Audi works team.
