BYD Atto 8 breaks cover

MANILA: BYD has debuted the Atto 8 at the ongoing Paris Auto Show. 

According to the Chinese manufacturer, its flagship seven-seater sport utility vehicle will set new standards for packaging, interior quality, and technology. Moreover, the nameplate is capable of “flash charging,” which juices up the electric vehicle (EV) in under 10 minutes. 

“As a technology company, BYD is all about turning intelligence into reality—and the Atto 8 is the perfect example of this. It blends our latest powertrain and second-generation Blade battery to offer more than 600km (kilometers) of range, seven-seat flexibility, and our latest innovations in cabin technology,” BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li was quoted as saying.  

“And flash charging is the breakthrough for EVs that everyone has been waiting for—recharging as fast as refuelling, removing range anxiety. With this model, we’re really demonstrating how our investment in R&D (research and development) isn’t just focused on coming up with fresh ideas; we’re putting these improvements into the hands of customers around the world, to improve their lives,” she added.

Vehicle specifications 

Electric powertrain 

Powering the BYD Atto 8 is an all-electric powertrain, with customers having the ability to choose between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. 

The former packs a single electric motor at the rear wheel axle, producing approximately 455 horsepower (hp) and 365 Newton-meter (Nm) of torque and zooms from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) in eight seconds. 

It is fitted with a 115 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery with a range of around 651 kilometers (km). 

On the other hand, the latter is able to send power to all four wheels thanks to two electric motors on both axles, with an estimated output of 765 hp and 775 Nm, delivering an acceleration speed of 4.6 seconds from zero to 100 kph. 

This version shares the same battery capacity as the rear-wheel drive model, and even with the extra performance, the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure range is still at 601 km. 

Flash charging 

Providing emissions-free energy is the second-gen Blade battery with “flash charging” capabilities. 

According to BYD, it can fill up the Atto 8’s sizeable 115 kWh battery from 10 to 70 percent of its capacity in just five minutes, and from 10 to 97 percent in only nine minutes. 

Fit, finish 

The BYD Atto 8 is touted as a full-size SUV with the following dimensions:

As such, the company notes that it allows generous accommodation for seven people and their luggage. 

Outside, it features ultra-slim integrated daytime-running lights and matrix-LED headlights. Its fascia is decorated with a lower bumper that incorporates crisp angles to widen the appearance. 

Its side profile features a sharp crease at the leading edge of the front doors, which leads into a strong shoulder line that runs along the profile towards a muscular curve above the rear wheel arch. 

The roofline hints at the excellent cabin space, thanks to a darkened C-pillar and a chrome-embellished D-pillar that help to stretch the car’s visual length. 

Its rear features “infinity knot” taillights, as well as a neatly integrated roof spoiler, along with subtle edges on the rear quarter panels that help to clean up airflow, boosting aerodynamic efficiency to help maximize range. 

Inside is a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, a 26-inch widescreen head-up display, and a 15.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen. 

The front seats—and the middle row—feature heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The rear-wheel drive model gets a 10-speaker sound system, while the all-wheel drive version packs a 21-speaker DiSound audio system. 

Other notable features include a front refrigerator, dual 50-watt wireless smartphone chargers, and a triple-zone climate control system.
