DOTr eyes Public-Private Partnership to fund big-ticket transport projects

MANILA: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is seeking assistance from the private sector for financial support for the development and implementation of transportation projects and programs.

According to DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, the government might seek assistance from the private sector because there are limited public funds to back big-ticket transport projects in the rail, aviation, and road sectors.

He identified the proposed privatization of the EDSA Busway and the construction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Cebu and Davao as potential Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives.

Bautista also said that PPP will also greatly benefit railway projects such as the North-South Commuter Railway, Metro Manila Subway Project, MRT-7, LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project, and South Long Haul Project.

The development of other airports, such as those in Clark, Bulacan, and Sangley in Cavite, are some of the potential PPP projects in the aviation sector.
