Ferrari launches 296 GT Modificata

MANILA: Ferrari has unveiled the 296 GT Modificata—a track-only offering equipped with the latest iteration of the brand’s six-cylinder engine that powered both production and race models.

Produced in “extremely limited” fashion, the Maranello-headquartered marque’s two-seater model is based on the 296 GT3 with additional technology from its Sports models.

Here’s what you need to know about the Ferrari 296 GT Modificata.

In a statement, Ferrari said that the denomination in the nameplate refers to 2.9-liter engine displacement and the six-cylinder architecture.

Powering the Ferrari 296 GT Modificata is a rear-mid mounted 2,992 cubic centimeter, 120-degree V6 internal combustion engine found in the 296 GT3 Evo--heavily modified to maximize performance.

The updates were mainly on the following portions:

• Cranktrain
• Camshafts
• Induction line
• Intercoolers
• Turbochargers

While their turbos share the exterior housing geometry, their internal components were designed specifically, drawing from experience gained with the 499P Modificata, the Sport Prototype model created for non-competitive track use by customers. Ferrari noted that the fuel system has been optimized for increased flow rate demands of the engine, with the addition of a low-pressure pump.

Furthermore, the six-speed sequential gearbox with a carbon clutch features new driving ratios to take advantage of the engine's new operating range, and its tailpipe design is completely new.

The powertrain configuration can deliver up to 720 horsepower (hp) and 800 Newton-meters of torque. With this, the Ferrari 296 GT Modificata can potentially lap the Fiorano circuit 3 seconds faster than the GT3 Evo sibling, which only produces 600 hp. 

Stopping power is guaranteed by new front disc brakes that have the same anti-locking mechanism found in the GT3 counterpart.

The brakes easily dissipate heat due to the inclusion of an additional air intake in the lower part of the front bumper and optimized brake cooling ducts.

Outside, the vehicle bespoke aerodynamic solutions have been incorporated;

• Front: “Slotted Splitter” wing and new front bonnet with a larger main aperture and a specific vane
• Rear: Revised wing (with center pylon, five-millimeter gurney flap)

Inside the Ferrari 296 GT Modificata has a two-seat cabin configuration that lets the driver take part in track days with an instructor for a more complete driving experience. To ensure comfort, the passenger seat has its own dedicated footrest, while the integrated intercom system allows constant communication between the driver and passenger.

Additionally, the new Ferrari 296 GT Modificata has features offered as options on the 296 GT3 Evo. Among them are:

• Data Acquisition System: includes additional sensors, such as pitot tubes for measuring air speed, damper potentiometers and brake temperature sensors
• VideoBox Premium: records video of the driver during their sessions to help them hone their performance together with their coach
• Rear Camera Premium
• IRTPMS Step 2 tire pressure and temperature monitoring system

Aside from that, owners can still personalize the car with optional features orderable as original equipment, including rear radar and the livery's color scheme, which clients can pick from the entire range of colors offered by the Ferrari Design Studio.
