Ferrari's gated manual shifter returns on new 12Cilindri Manuale

MANILA: Ferrari has introduced a new limited-edition variant of the 12Cilindri two-seater grand tourer that’s equipped with a gated manual shifter.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How many examples of the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale will be produced?

Only 1,499 units of the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale will be made.
  • What is the engine of the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale?

    The Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale uses a naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V12 gasoline engine.
  • Notably, this is a milestone for the brand, as it signals that it has not forgotten those who fell in love with driving thanks to its signature gated manual shifters on age-old models like the F430, 360 Modena, and the F355.

Called the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, it sports a six-speed gated shifter (complete with polished metallic finishings) and a polished steel knob that looks quite similar in style to the ones found on older Ferrari nameplates. It even has a clutch pedal.

This system, however, is a totally new development from the Maranello-headquartered brand, as it isn’t actually a manual gearbox but rather a shift-by-wire dual-clutch transmission that relies on sensors and advanced kinematic systems.

In other words, what this new “Manuale By Wire,” as Ferrari calls it, can provide is very realistic manual-shifting sensations, complete with a resistant clutch, as well as the ability to actually stall the car. And being a DCT, it does have real gears, with two extra ones for cruising.

Nevertheless, the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale still has an “automatic mode” that can be accessed by pressing the “D” button. This, per the brand, can be done even while the car is moving.

While the “Manuale by Wire” is a totally new development, this newly released version of the 12Cilindri carried over the same engine from the regular fully automatic model. Specifically, it uses a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 gasoline engine that can produce up to 819 horsepower and 678 Newton-meters of torque.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale: other details

With only 1,499 examples to be produced, the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale can be considered as an ultra-limited sports car. As such, it also received exclusive details to make it stand out more from the “standard” 12Cilindri.

For its exterior, the 12Cilindri with the gated manual shifter has access to an exclusive set of forged alloy wheels. The car can also be decorated with a special livery that highlights its gated shifter.

Color options for the new variant include 25 iconic Ferrari colors. This includes Rosso Rubino from the Ferrari 12Cilindri Launch Edition.

Last but not least is a special monochromatic “Scudetto” over its front wheel arches. According to the Italian marque, this was made using an embossing technique used in rare coins.

Inside, the car has a similar interior design to the standard 12Cilindri. This means a triple digital display setup with a 15.6-inch main screen, recycled Alcantara trimmings, as well as an optional Burmester speaker set.

Likewise present is a wireless smartphone charging pad, a D-shaped steering wheel, a fully digital gauge cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

On the Manuale version, the car comes with a revamped center console to accommodate the gated shifter.

For now, Ferrari’s local arm has yet to say if the 12Cilindri Manuale will be made available in the Philippine market. Do note, however, that with only 1,499 units allocated, we think it would be a stretch to expect an official local introduction.

The standard Ferrari 12Cilindri, however, is available from Velocità Motors Incorporated, the exclusive importer and distributor of Ferrari for the Philippines.
