Recent Updates of Chevrolet Spark

Chevrolet’s city car is now in its fourth generation and the new for 2019 version has been launched very recently in the Philippines. The car features a redesigned front grille with generous use of chrome and extended headlights. The B-segment hatchback now comes with a heavily updated 7-inch touchscreen infotainment centre that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on all variants. The same goes for safety equipment which is almost equally shared across all variants.

There are three variants to pick from, all of which are equipped with a 1.4-litre inline 4 engine making 99 PS and 94 Nm of torque. There is one 5-speed manual transmission on offer while the other two are available with CVT transmission. With a very feature-rich package and affordable pricing, the Chevrolet Spark is now even more desirable as a family hatchback.

It was 2 decades ago when General Motors under its subsidiary brand Chevrolet, launched the first-ever Spark. However, the Spark of today has lived up to four generations and has gone through every change ever possible for a small car. The car has been one of the favorites for small car lovers and people who needed a vehicle which was good enough for their daily usage. Sold across the globe, Spark has got some different names as well. Opel Karl, Vauxhall Viva, and Beat are the names given to the Spark in some countries. The latest variant of the Spark is a mixed bag with some surprising features for its class and a few unexpected downsides.

Interior & Features

The interior of the new Spark by Chevrolet is just like the overall package, a mixed bag. The additions of a 7-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system that comes with AUX/Bluetooth/USB connectivity along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and 6 speakers are surprising ones for a car of this segment. There is no difference in space for the driver and the front passenger, but the reduction of 56 mm in the length makes legroom a little less at the rear. The plastic used is of no luxurious quality, it is hard and black with aluminium accents doing justice to the price one will pay for the new Spark. The instrument console is digital + analog where the speedo and the tacho are analog with other indicators like fuel, seat belt, and more being digital. Where most of the drivers won’t find a problem with the presence of a 4-way adjustable seat, the lack of an adjustable steering may hurt on some occasions. And something else that is good and well above the expected is the quality of the switchgear in the car where the steering wheel also comes equipped with phone, and audio controls.

Although the new Spark is slightly smaller than the previous one, make no mistake as it looks far better than the last model we saw. The new projector headlamps, LED parklights, 15-inch alloy wheels, and the roof rails give it that edge over its competitors in the same class. The rear spoiler with integrated LED stop lamp, front radiator grille divided into two by the Chevrolet logo, and the ORVMs with integrated turn signals all give the Spark a modern look. For dimensional data, the latest Chevrolet Spark measures up to 3,635 mm in length, 1,595 mm in width, and 1,483 mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2,385 mm.

Ride & Handling

Taking care of the ride quality are the regular Independent, MacPherson Strut up front and the Torsion Beam Axle at the rear. The Spark gets generously big 15-inch alloy wheels with 185/55 R 15 H tyres at both front and rear. Braking duties on the car are assigned to the ventilated discs at the front and drums at the rear, just like in any other small car.  Thanks to the addition of a new electric power steering that makes the handling of the car better than the previous Spark. Being a small car with a smaller turning radius, there are no pains in flicking the car through traffic or parking it in a crowded area.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Being a small, budget car there are no surprises in the power department of the new Spark. It comes with a 1.4-litre inline-4 engine that can produce a maximum of 99 PS of power and 128 Nm of peak torque. When given some road to pull the horses, the Spark can do a 0-100 kmph in around 11 seconds. The car will do good enough to keep up with the traffic but do not expect it to provide you with any of those thrills. One can choose between a 5-speed manual or a CVT transmission to power the front wheels. Along with an engine that could have been powered a little more, the fuel efficiency also is a slight setback being around 14 kmpl when compared with other competitors.

Braking & Safety

The Spark comes with quite a few safety features. Dual airbags take care of the driver and the front passenger in a collision. Child Safety Locks make sure that the little ones are always safe at the back.

Where there are a 7-inch infotainment system and many more features that make the Chevrolet Spark the best-in-the-class. There is an underpowered engine, low fuel efficiency, small rear space, higher price tag which all make it more like a “car of choice” than a “car of necessity”. But for anyone who is out there looking for a captivating, full of features car in the small hatchback segment, the Chevrolet Spark is an option worth giving a shot.

Chevrolet Spark – Sporty yet tiny car

This mini sized Chevrolet car has stolen my heart the moment I found it in the car showroom. That Sunday, I went to a nearby auto showroom with my friend just to check out casually what all new cars has launched. I was blown over by this new Chevrolet Spark instantly. I have seen their earlier version. But I can Read More
