Overview

Whoever thinks that vans or MPVs cannot be luxurious and always are boring has never seen the Toyota Alphard. Considered as one of the world’s most luxurious and premium min van/MPV, the Toyota Alphard was primarily introduced specifically for the Japanese market back in 2002. However, witnessing its increasing popularity and word-of-mouth publicity, it gradually began to make its mark in other countries as well and is now one of the highest selling MPVs in the world. For the Philippines market, the Toyota Alphard is available only in a single variant with one powertrain option on offer and three different paint schemes – luxury white pearl, steel blonde metallic, and black.

Interior & Features

On the inside, the Alphard doesn’t look as loud as its exterior design. The cabin, however, has a feeling of sophistication and premium appeal which usually are sensed only in high-end saloons or SUVs.

The four-spoke steering wheel with a vertical strips and silver finish complements its grille design. It also gets buttons for various functions like infotainment system and cruise control. The simply laid out two pod instrument console with a colored MID screen looks neat and provides ample information on board.

The inverted trapezoidal centre console looks wide and makes the overall dashboard appear huge in isolation. The overall layout along with the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system looks premium and luxurious, however, the old-school buttons for the music system and automatic climate don’t complement with the overall futuristic appeal of the car. The transmission tunnel is positioned at a substantial height, which gives the Alphard a king-like feeling when you sit inside, it looks rich as well, thanks to the overuse of premium looking silver elements.

In terms of comfort and convenience features and equipment, the Toyota Alphard is loaded up to the brim, and the amount of space on offer is also in abundance. The overall layout of the seats and ambient lighting within the cabin give it a lounge like feel on the inside. Adding to it, the large glass areas give it an airy feel within the cabin, which makes the already spacious cabin feel even more accommodating.

Exterior

On the outside, the Toyota Alphard doesn’t appear as any other next-door MPV. It displays a very unique and extrovert design language which surely is eye-catching, thus making it a head-turner. However, the very unique styling might not be to everyone’s taste, as the exterior design does draw polarized opinions.

Drawing the biggest attention towards the Toyota Alphard is its massive vertical front chrome grille, which is huge and comes with a mix of horizontal as well as vertical slats. The grille is further complemented with a thick chrome slat and Toyota’s premium logo at the upper end. The two diagonal chrome bars at both the sides, with the latter blending gracefully within the full LED headlamps are further assisted by daytime running LEDs for a more blingy presence. The grille further extends down towards the large front bumper, which again get triangular fog lamp housings with chrome inserts.

The side profile of the Toyota Alphard is equally distinctive as that of the front, though the short bonnet and long wheelbase give it a silhouette of a typical minivan. However, the design of the sliding doors with an inverted design for side mirrors and chrome embellishments on them, along with door-mounted rear view mirrors and diamond cut alloy wheels, give it a unique and premium stance.

At the rear, the squarish profile of the rear door makes it look like a typical van. However, the horizontally laid S-shaped LED tail lamps look very different, and the thick chrome bar joining the headlamps at the rear further enhance the premium appeal of the car.

Ride & Handling

The Toyota Alphard comes in choices of 7-and 8-seating layout. Further, considering the huge wheelbase of 3000 mm and a height of 1890 mm, the overall legroom and headroom of the Alphard are large enough to seat up to 8 adults with complete ease. The Alphard gets MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbone setup at the rear, which given its MPV roots are set on a softer side, thus translating into a very plush ride quality. However, considering its boxy design, the Alphard is not meant for aggressive driving, but then, the body roll is kept well under control in order to affirm its superior ride quality.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

For the Philippines market, Toyota has made the Alphard available in only one petrol engine. Powering this huge minivan is a 3.5-litre dual VVT-I V6 petrol motor mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This mill churns around 296 bhp of power and 361 Nm of torque in total. These numbers surely give the Alphard some brisk performance on the go, which is further complements the sheer refinement this motor provides. However, given its big size nature, it is quite thirsty.

Braking & Safety

The flagship minivan from Toyota has to succeed in terms of safety equipment, and the Alphard successfully manages to do this task very well. The minivan gets surround airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle stability control, hill launch assist, and many more nifty safety features making sure that the vehicle’s safety complements with its luxury appeal as well.

Verdict

The segment of minivans and MPVs have never been as desirable as that of the SUVs, however, the Toyota Alphard tries to change this perception with its premium appeal and luxurious feel, both in and out. The exterior design might look awkward for some, but it is this distinctive appeal of the Alphard which gives it a unique proposition among others. The vehicle, with a large number of comfort and convenience features, oodles of space and excellent lounge lighting, has a cabin which only one could dream in a custom-made minivan. This luxurious appeal of the Alphard gets further assistance of the supple ride quality, thus rounding up the overall package. No wonders then, why the Toyota Alphard is regarded as the king of MPVs in some countries.
