No vehicle segment in the Philippines market is as competitive as the small capacity commuter market. The sheer demand makes it lucrative for a large number of competitors that have launched a huge number of models with a variety of engine capacities that cater to an even wider variety of customer needs. Brands like MotorStar bring up the lower end of the spectrum here with their low-cost underbones that are surprisingly well equipped for their price. Yet with questionable build quality and reliability, they are still finding it difficult to gain traction in the market. The Sapphire 110-II is the company’s direct competitor to that behemoth of the segment, the Honda Wave 110 Alpha. It even seems to copy the Honda in its design but that is something that too many companies can be accused of. Then there are competitors like the Kymco Visar, which end up even cheaper than the MotorStar. At its price point of Php 40000, the MotorStar Sapphire 110-II falls right in the middle. Here then, is a look at what you can expect from this bike.
Honda created a blueprint for the most versatile underbone moped with the Wave and no wonder it is so blatantly copied by so many manufacturers. Even so, there is room for improvement. MotorStar puts its own spin on the tried and tested formula and ends up resolving some of the issues with the Wave design. The Sapphire 110-II does away with the stalk-mounted indicators of the older model of the Wave and integrates them into the headlight and taillight cluster. This keeps the indicators from getting damaged during a fall or even getting snagged on another vehicle. This also gives the bike a three light setup that gives it a distinct look. There are other touches like the wavy design of the front apron and the fully enclosed design of the area behind the apron that gives the Sapphire a refined look. The old school silencer does look out of place but the three color schemes on offer – red, blue, and black – with grey paneling and stickers, give it a lot of style. The bike has compact dimensions with a length of 1900 mm, width of 700 mm and height of 1020 mm. The wheels are spoked and wrapped in skinny tires. The instrumentation is also basic and analog. But at this price point, these things are pretty much expected.
The MotorStar Sapphire 110-II comes with telescopic front forks and dual shock absorbers for the rear. The suspension does a decent job of keeping the vagaries of the road away from the rider. But nothing else. The seat is narrow and the skinny tires do not inspire much confidence. The seating position is neutral thanks to high handlebars in relation to the seat. But it is still best suited for short rides in the city.
The engine powering the Sapphire 110-II is a 109.6 cc air-cooled and carbureted unit. While official numbers are not available, the power delivered is enough to take the bike up to speeds of 90 kmph. This should not be much trouble because of the bike’s low weight of just 90 kg. It is not the most refined engine and vibrations can be felt at all speeds but that is what you get for a bike at this price point. The bike is otherwise rated for a maximum load of 150 kg. The engine comes with both a kick starter and an electric starter. The fuel tank has a capacity of 4.5L.
The company has provided the Sapphire 110-II with a disc brake on the front along with a drum brake for the rear. This does seem like a pleasant surprise when disc brakes are still not available on more expensive bikes in the same segment.
There is a case to be made for the affordability brought in by the MotorStar Sapphire 110-II. It delivers nice styling and commuter ready usability for a very cheap price. But it is still a cheap bike from a little known Chinese brand. Parts and service availability are sketchy at best and reliability is nothing to brag about either. And when the price is within the range of other competitors, why wouldn’t you spend that little bit extra and buy the Wave instead?
Underbone scooters are in high demand in the Philippines market. But I was particularly in search of one which should be an incredible choice that is well equipped as well. Price was a constraint to me though. Finally after a thorough market research I halted my search with Motorstar sapphire-110-ii. This is a replica model of what I had in
The Motorstar Sapphire 110 II is a hugely practical bike. It still looks stylish because of the sharp-styled headlight, and the attractive color scheme. The front bumper is somewhat raised to forge a dirt bike feel. But honestly, the Sapphire 110 II isn’t meant for that. The seat is flat and wide which lends a comfortable ride. The engine is
I was looking for a commuter for my father as his older scooter was in no condition to be driven on the streets anymore. Even though he would not accept it, it was time he replaced his scooter. Therefore, I decided to surprise him with a new commuter, but the question was which one. That is when my friend recommended
If it comes to buying a motorcycle that is just perfect for everyday commute and commercial use as well, the Motorstar Sapphire 110-II is definitely an excellent option. I settled for the bike after a lot of research about bikes in its segment. The bike has a really practical design with a highly comfortable riding posture as well as great
I was very impressed with this stylish and practical bike I recently purchased. Although carefully designed as a multifunctional motorcycle by MotorStar, it provides great comfort for any rider. I often plan to go for a road trip on this bike and everytime am surprised at how the motorcycle interacts with me and accompanies me to ride alone. Even after
I own a MotorStar Sapphire 110 - II and I am not ashamed of it being a very small moped. The reason I say this is that I use this for daily commutes as well as a 250cc motorcycle for weekends. This Sapphire 110 is a very fuel-efficient option and does not feel underpowered at all, thanks to the 110cc
Too much impressed with my recent purchase of this sleek looking practical bike. Inspite of being thoughtfully designed as a utility bike, this offers the riders with ample of comfort. I often plan road trips on this and get amazed at the way the bike cooperates and accompany me on my solo rides. I do not feel single trace of
I was really delighted when I got lucky at a lottery and got the opportunity to buy one of the motorStar bikes at a discounted price. When I entered the dealership and set my eyes on the red shining bike I knew this was it. The motorbike has been designed for utmost comfort and makes sure at the same time
