Everything about your car's brake fluid

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, most car owners prioritize the regular changing of oil. However, many still overlook an equally important component, the brake fluid.

The brake fluid, also known as hydraulic fluid, is being used every time you engage the vehicle's brakes. The fluid makes the brakes operate properly, and since the braking system is one of the primary safety features of a vehicle, it should be properly maintained.

The brake fluid takes the force from the depressed brake pedal, converts it into pressure, and distributes this pressure to the front and rear brakes to stop the vehicle. Without brake fluid, no pressure will be generated to get the vehicle to complete stop. Road issues may occur if there are any leaks or if the fluid has not been changed regularly.

To check the condition of the brake fluid, look at the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. There should be indicators showing the proper level of fluid. If it is at a lower level than normal, it is time to add brake fluid.

To know the recommended time frame for replacing the fluid, check the owner’s manual as it varies per vehicle.

It is also important to know if there is a leak in the system since the brakes will not be able to function properly in this condition.

There are also other signs that indicate that the brake fluid is low. Among these signs are:

• Illuminated brake light
• Brake pedal issues
• Brake pad problems
• Burning smells
• Odd noises

If you experience any of these signs while driving, check the brake fluid reservoir immediately to ensure that you have the right amount of brake fluid in your vehicle.

There are three different types of brake fluid: DOT3, DOT4, and DOT5. DOT3 is the most common type of brake fluid. It has a glycol base and a lower boiling point. Meanwhile, DOT4 has a higher boiling point than DOT3, making it more efficient. DOT5,  on the other hand, is a silicon-based fluid that does not absorb water. It has the highest boiling point among the three types of brake fluid. It is not commonly used on road vehicles.

All brake fluids look the same. A new brake fluid is clear and might have a yellow tint on it. It should remain relatively clear over the years.

If the brake fluid needs replacement, it will get darker. If the brake fluid of your vehicle starts to appear like motor oil, it is time to have the brake fluid replaced.
