9th PH Electric Vehicle Summit to champion quick electro-mobility adoption

MANILA: The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP), in partnership with the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and Department of Energy (DOE), will stage the 9th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS) on August 26 and 27 via Zoom.

With the theme “Accelerating the Switch to Electro-Mobility in the Philippines,” the two-day conference will center on fast-tracking the adoption of electro-mobility in the local transport sector.

“We need to step up our efforts to achieve our goals for rapid EV deployment, and to do this, government and private sectors need to collectively reaffirm their commitment to do so,” EVAP President Edmund Araga stated. “Among the highlights of the 9th PEVS will be the symbolic signing of the stakeholder Memorandum of Understanding, which is aimed at speeding up the switch to electro-mobility by 2025.”

Representatives from key government agencies, the academe, civil society, and EVAP will join the activity to reassert their commitment to expedite the transition to sustainable mobility.

Policy dialogues about technologies and solutions will be tackled on the first day of the event. This year’s PEVS will start off with keynote messages from EV champions in the legislative and executive branches of the government including House Committee on Energy Chairman Rep. Juan Miguel Macapagal-Arroyo, DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi, and Senate Committee on Energy Chairman Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian. A keynote message from a high-ranking official of the United Kingdom is also expected to be delivered during the event.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding between the Asian Federation of Electric Vehicle Association (AFEVA) and the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE) will also be conducted on the first day of the online conference. Other activities to look forward on the first day of PEVS include a session on EV policy and standards regulation and discussions on the future of EV technology.

On the second day, value chain development and market opportunities will be discussed. The sessions will tackle the production of EVs and batteries, construction of charging network and infrastructure, feasible business models, and financing EV programs.

At present, the government is working to fulfill the goals of the EV Industry Roadmap set by the Department of Trade and Industry- Board of Investments (DTI-BOI). Through this program, stakeholders who are involved in adoption of low-emission technologies are provided with incentives. Meanwhile, the two houses of Congress are also working to pass the Electric Vehicle and Charging Stations Act to increase the demand for EVs and make them more affordable. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) also promotes electro-mobility through its public utility vehicle modernization program. It aims to replace traditional public transport vehicles with environment-friendly alternatives that comply with global standards. Recently, the Land Transportation Office issued the regulations on electric vehicle use in the Philippines.

The 9th PEVS is co-presented by the DOE and Nissan Philippines in partnership with Mitsubishi Motors Philippines, Power Equipment and Supply Inc. (PESIN), Integrated Micro-Electronics, Inc. (IMI), and Delta Electronics International (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.
