BYD to recall 110k units for design, battery defects

MANILA: BYD is recalling more than 110,000 vehicles for possible issues on their design and batteries.

Recently, the company filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation involving select Tang series and Yuan Pro pure electric vehicles. The initiative for the nameplates are set to take effect immediately.

Per China's market regulator, a total of 44,535 2015 Tang series vehicles manufactured from March 28, 2015-July 28, 2017 are requested to be returned due to component design issues.

“In extreme cases, this can cause circuit board corrosion and disable the vehicle's pure electric drive mode, posing a safety hazard,” SAMR noted.

In line with this, the company’s dealers will provide a free software update for vehicles within the recall scope, changing the discharge method to electric discharge to eliminate safety hazards.

On the other hand, 71,248 Yuan Pro pure electric vehicles produced between February 6, 2021 and August 5, 2022 are also being recalled for probable improperly-installed power battery gaskets, resulting in reduced sealing.

“Prolonged high-speed driving through water may cause water to enter the power battery, degrading insulation performance. In extreme cases, the power battery output power may be reduced, posing a safety hazard,” the firm shared.

For safety, dealers shall use a special sealant to reinforce the power battery housings of recalled vehicles for free.
