Which company gave Diaz the free fuel for life reward?
It was Phoenix Petroleum. Why did Phoenix Petroleum stop Diaz's free fuel for life reward?
Because she declined to post her fuel donation and entered a contract with another fuel company. His clarification statement followed another post wherein Ferrer noted that the athlete’s supposed free lifetime supply of fuel from Phoenix Petroleum (which resurfaced online due to the ongoing oil crisis in the Middle East), ended just after two years.

“We have taken note of the statement released by Phoenix Petroleum regarding the fuel donation extended to Hidilyn after her historic gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics,” Ferrer wrote, pertaining to the fuel company’s issued statement, which says that due to the changed circumstance (after Diaz declined to post her free fuel donation, confirmed that she entered a contract with another petroleum company, and ceased communicating with Phoenix Petroleum), they had to cut Diaz’s access to her lifetime supply of fuel.
“At the time the fuel benefit from Phoenix Petroleum was announced, it was presented publicly as a “Free Fuel For Life” reward and it was conveyed to us as a gesture of support and recognition for Hidylin’s achievement for the country. Importantly, no conditions or restrictions were communicated to us at the time the reward was given,” he added.
“It was only around two years later that conditions relating to brand alignment were raised… there was also no agreement or condition communicated that would prevent Hidilyn from entering into partnerships with other petroleum companies,” he explained.
Ferrer later noted that the statement he made as Diaz’s manager was “entirely factual” and was “based on the circumstances as they occurred.”
Rising fuel prices
The relevance of free fuel is understandable as the current war in the Middle East caused prices for products at the pump to soar unprecedentedly.
Earlier this month, the Department of Energy debunked the projected big-time hike in oil prices after the conflict broke out and even called out companies that will not follow the price hike guidelines.
However, the expected hikes turned out to be true, with the same agency posting an advisory on Facebook stating that the price adjustments were to be applied in tranches to ease the burden on motorists.
