Lamborghini’s production facility celebrates 10 years of being on-balance carbon neutral

MANILA: Automobili Lamborghini is celebrating ten years of achieving on-balance carbon neutrality for its production site.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much emissions did Automobili Lamborghini's production facility reduce in the past 10 years?

Compared to 2014, the facility trimmed down 49 percent of its emissions.
  • What does being "on-balance carbon neutral" mean?

Being on-balance carbon neutral means the company offsets projects to compensate for the residual and unavoidable ones — arriving at a new zero net balance.
  • In a statement, the Sant’Agata Bolognese-headquartered automaker described the decision to pursue a carbon neutrality certification as “strategic and proactive” — and came with a strong backing from the entire organization.

According to the vehicle manufacturer, the vision led to making the production facility the first in the world to receive such certification from DNV (Det Norske Veritas).

“We decided to undertake a courageous journey ten years ago, and we have turned sustainability into strategic leverage for the company’s future. Today we are celebrating an important goal, and above all we are confirming our commitment to a tangible, measurable evolution consistent with the brand’s values,” Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephan Winkelmann was quoted as saying.

Automobili Lamborghini explained that “on-balance” carbon neutrality is a condition in which a company offsets projects to compensate for the residual and unavoidable ones — arriving at a new zero net balance.

The company shared that Lamborghini achieved the carbon neutrality in its Sant’Agata Bolognese production site by enjoying operations targeted at reducing emissions with voluntary offsetting projects carried out worldwide. Carbon emissions generated while using the vehicle are excluded, the firm added.

    Road to on-balance carbon neutrality

Per Automobili Lamborghini, the path— started in 2015 with the certification of the Sant’Agata Bolognese site — has developed over the years by taking new tangible energy efficiency and technological innovation measures, accompanied by compensating for the residual, unavoidable emissions.

Over the last 10 year, the company trimmed down the emissions coming from its production site by 49 percent compared to 2014 — amid the firm doubling in size.

Further, Automobili Lamborghini noted that it installed its first photovoltaic system in 2010 and was later enlarged to cover a total surface area of 15,000 square meters — one of the region’s biggest at that time.

The aforementioned system generates and injects over two million kilowatt-hours a year into the power grid — aiding in the reduction of about 800 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Currently Automobili Lamborghini is eyeing to expand its photovoltaic system as part of its decarbonization strategy, with work involving the warehouse area to be completed by the end of 2025.

Energy efficiency also made its way in the company’s head offices. The Torre 1963 (opened in 2017) was LEED Platinum with a score of 92 out of 100 — the highest ever achieved in Italy at the time.

Further, two trigeneration plants (which can simultaneously produce electricity, thermal energy and cooling energy starting from a single source that is natural gas) went into operation in 2015 and 2017. Their annual production of 22,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) saved an estimated 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

Lamborghini also became Italy’s first automotive company to adopt a biogas-fueled district heating system in 2015. It can supply 3,000 MWh a year of thermal energy and to reduce another 500 tons of carbon dioxide.

Since 2022, Automobili Lamborghini has bolstered its commitment to improving energy efficiency in high-consumption areas through the work of its Energy Efficiency Task Force, significantly enhancing the overall performance of the production site.

“The Sant'Agata Bolognese facility today is a concrete example of how we can combine first-rate manufacturing and environmental responsibility. Every action is the result of an integrated vision that places efficiency, innovation and sustainability at the heart of our everyday operations,” Automobili Lamborghini Chief Manufacturing Officer Ranieri Niccoli said.

Automobili Lamborghini also carried out environmental and energy management systems compliant with the ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 50001:2018 international standards. It also obtained certification in 2009.

Automobili Lamborghini is now looking to the future with a clear strategy set out in the Direzione Cor Tauri roadmap, and with the goal of strengthening its sustainable industrial model balanced between engineering excellence and environmental responsibility.

Last year, the emissions of the production site (Scope 1 and 2) was only 29,849 tons of carbon dioxide.

The presently residual unavoidable emissions are instead fully compensated for with certified carbon credits.
