Next-gen Jeep Compass unveiled, is PH next?

MANILA: Jeep has unveiled the next-generation Compass in Italy. It will be manufactured at the Stellantis-owned Melfi plant, which is a cornerstone of the company’s electrification initiatives. 

Per Jeep, the all-new Compass now utilizes the STLA Medium platform, which allows the nameplate to use a variety of electrified or all-electric powertrains. 

The next-gen model’s debut in Europe likewise signifies the carmaker’s current global strategy that goes beyond the borders of the United States - Jeep’s home country. 

“The new Jeep Compass boldly represents the brand’s forward-thinking philosophy, highlighting our dedication to not only meeting today’s market demands but also anticipating tomorrow’s opportunities,” Head of Jeep Brand in Enlarged Europe Fabio Catone said. 

“This vehicle is the perfect expression of the Jeep ruggedness and performance, delivering state-of-the-art solutions while preserving our commitment to electrification and sustainability. Crafted for outdoor adventures yet perfect for everyday use, the new Jeep Compass stands as a powerful testament to our relentless pursuit of innovation and versatility, designed to meet the diverse needs of customers around the world,” Catone added. 

So, what is the next-generation Jeep Compass offering to prospective adopters? Let’s find out here. 

Exterior

While its appearance has certainly evolved from its predecessor, Jeep says that the new Compass managed to maintain the tough and rugged nature the brand is known for. 

Up front, it sports a modern version of the iconic Jeep seven-slot grille. The aforementioned is flanked by a pair of rectangular LED headlamp clusters and is capped from the bottom by a chunky front bumper.

Over towards the sides, the next-gen Compass received trapezoidal wheel arches and a good amount of black plastic claddings. Its rear was likewise made more eye-catching thanks to X-shaped taillights, an LED taillight bar, and a prominent roof-mounted rear wing. Completing the look of the model is a set of 20-inch wheels. 

The full figures for the next-gen sport utility vehicle’s dimensions were not disclosed, but the brand did share some measurements that are crucial for those wanting to take the model out on adventures.

Interior

Apart from its rugged exterior looks, the next-gen Jeep Compass also boasts a more modern cabin when compared to the outgoing model. 

Dominating its dashboard is a 16-inch infotainment system. Its driver, meanwhile, can read relevant vehicle parameters through a 10-inch digital gauge. Likewise available on the all-new model are the following:

• Over-the-air software updates
• 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats
• 34-liter front interior storage compartment
• Leather upholstery
• Electronic parking brake
• Rotary gear selector
• Electronic parking brake
• Drive mode selector (Selec-Terrain)
• Ventilated seats

According to Jeep, the five-seater model boasts 55 mm of additional legroom, thanks to the STLA Medium platform. It likewise has a maximum boot capacity of 550 liters, with the rear seats folded down. 

With regards to safety, Jeep has yet to release a full list, but it does come with a semi-automatic lane change assist system, level 2 autonomous driving capabilities, front and rear parking sensors - among others. 

Powertrain

The next-generation Jeep Compass is available with all-electric, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. 

The most potent among the ones listed above is a 375-horsepower (hp) all-wheel-drive (AWD) model, which sits as the nameplate's top-spec trim. 

As Jeep shared, the AWD version uses a front and rear electric motor made exclusively for the brand. It is linked to a 14:1 rear reducer, which translates to added traction from the rear wheels for dealing with challenging driving situations. 

Additionally, the EV versions of the Jeep Compass come with a 160 kilowatt (kW) direct current (DC) charging system capable of filling up its batteries from 20-80 percent in just 30 minutes. It also boasts an electric driving range of 650 kilometers (km), according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure. 

Below is a table showing the peak horsepower figures of the mild-hybrid and PHEV trims. For now, however, no torque figures were disclosed by the car maker.

Additionally, Jeep took great care to make the next-gen Compass as aerodynamic as possible. Particular to the top-spec EV AWD trim are drag-lowering parts such as an active grille shutter, front and rear wheel airducts, and a fully flat underbody. 

Availability

The initial selling period for the next-gen Jeep Compass is set to commence in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2025. 

For now, Jeep Philippines has yet to indicate if it will bring in the all-new model, but the American brand did say that the Compass has achieved a good deal of global market penetration since its initial introduction back in 2006. 

Remember also that the said nameplate was once sold in the local market. So, with this all-new version, maybe it is due for a Philippine market comeback.
